Hi everyone,
Im facing a mysterious problem I hope someone can help me on this. Just to be clear I would like to mention the parts in the car that could be related to issue. Originally an SMG E46 m3 175,000 km manual swapped with a 4.1 final drive and LW single mass flywheel and clutch kit from Burkhart Engineering and CAE shifter.
So after a build that took me almost 3 years to get done, I test drove the car but and everything was great. Last week I booked a trackday, started the day and all was good until this issue came up on the last couple of sessions. I was hearing some weird ticking noises underneath the car so I pulled back to the pits and try hear it clearly. I recognized it was a clear rattle noise on idle while clutch released + normal chattering sound from the single mass Flywheel. I supposed it could be coming from the engine so I pressed on the clutch ( chattering noise disapeared ) and that ticking/rattle still there. I tried revving in both clutch in and out, and that rattle sound gets louder with while revving ( and Im hearing it right under shifter). Took the car back home, next day car is cold, started the engine and that noise was minimal for 3 minutes until its noticable, and more louder when revning 10% only.
Short story long, I took it to workshop Jacked it up and with a stethoscope inspecting where the sound is coming from, and it seems coming from from the gearbox. So I drained the gearbox oil and check for and metal chips, Oil color was greenish but couldnt notice huge amount of metal chips I thought its normal from an oil that never been changed, as for the color some specialist say its normal. I dropped the gearbox to check clutch plate bolts, thinking something is loose from the clutch, all were tight and intact. So I changed the gearbox oil with new ravenol 75w80. I started it and surprisignly no rattle sound in nuetral both clutch in and out but the vibration was still there. I test drove the car, thinking sound will come back in operating temp and fortunetly no rattle My concern there is a vibration that came up with the rattle in gearbox and is still there, not knowing if its from pilot bearing, input/output shaft bearing, Ps: Engine and Transmission mounts all is new and torqued to spec, and vibration when car is on idle and its gets worse exactly at 1500 rpm.
Now as far as I know this transmission is robust and im not having any trouble shifting but sound was there and right after oil change it disappeared, while the vibration remains there in the car not knowing exactly where its coming from. Im lost what is causing the vibration. Any idea or someone experienced this would be helpful!
