What's with the hate on Nappa Grey?

I like it but a black carpet swap is pretty much required.

The rough ones show worse(more accurate) in photos than black. A lot of these cars with "clean" black interiors look super rough in person too though. They just hide the problems better in photos.

I could be bias though and lived through the Dove Grey years in my E36 M3, I couldn't stand it so I did the swap earlier this year.

This. At least the E46 grey is an upgrade from the virtually white of E36. I had a 2001 530 with grey interior, but that color had some blue in it, more interesting.

the gray is fine if it's in good condition, but I think it wears worse than black does. so your average dove gray car looks worse than your average black interior car.

I also think it's fine if you have an interesting exterior color, which I guess in our case basically means a blue of some sort. You also need just a little contrasting black in the interior to make it work.

also why the US e39 and e38 have less leg room than the rest of the world— puffy dash boards.

I agree. Grey leather and nearly everything else black is my favorite combination. BMW has been doing this on current models and it looks great esp with perforated leather seats.
