That is part of the design of the S54 head gasket. If he took a second to look at the old factory Elring head gasket that came off the engine, he would find that it is the exact same.

Original Elring head gaskets installed at the factory do look different than the current ones in regards to the sealant, but it makes no difference. Back then, it appears Elring coated entire face of the gasket with sealant. BMW supplies the current Elring gasket.
