I think you’re conflating all BMW gaskets with specifically the valve cover gasket.

We routinely have valve cover gasket leak threads, and 99.9% of the time the problem is that they didn’t use the OE gasket. In the specific case of the VCG, the OE gasket works well and others very often do not.

… and my Toyota experience is that they don’t use many gaskets— mostly just fancy RTV.

I do recommend the fancy Toyota RTV for all of your RTV needs. The Honda, GM, Chrysler, and Ford fancy RTVs also work well.

But they do use gaskets for the valve covers, seals for actual seals (anything that spins), and o-rings where they need o-rings. I think the oil pan and timing cover are the only sealed surfaces on my engines (1GR-FSE) that use FIPG. I haven't dug too deep into it because nothing ever fails.

Yea, thats it. I am partial to FIPG just because of the packing, its in a traditional "toothpaste tube" type container.

In your case with the vanos deal just use your finger and put on a light coat around the permiter of that bolt hole area and also were the vanos mates to the head up top.

You can also put some in the "half moon" divots on the rear of the head, but those are a bitch to clean out the next time.
