I would keep the car until you at least move to CA. Enjoy the car for a little. You might find that it has more utility than you believe. I have a dog and an 11 year old and we make it through just fine. If you do decide to sell it. Part it out and revert it back to stock. You’ll definitely get the most $$$ for that. Also the market will likely give you a higher premium selling it in CA over TX. Just my thoughts.

I hope buyers feel the same way!Originally posted by theOracle View PostThis is very well sorted. The mileage is pretty low. Big 3 done. The market is full of buyers that would see the value in the mods. I watch the auctions nearly everyday and in my opinion this car would fetch upwards of $40k. Slicktops are rare.
I have one with 78k miles, but I have a sunroof.

None of these people have been to SF I see
San Francisco + no parking spot?

Storage will be well in excess of $1000 a month.
And if left out, the car will be stolen within a week.
Yes, there are amazing drives in the Bay Area... they're 2 hours away from where you live. Each way. At least
And if you aren't on the road at 5AM, expect a ton of traffic. That "cruise" you planned now has you stuck behind a truck going 30mph.
Sell the car. Once you get a garage, or get tired of this shitty state and move, you can pick up another "fun" car.2004 Dinan S3-R M3

This, fuck that place. I wake up and see relatively empty roads all day every day, zero crime, acreage, and no state inspections. It's super rough 🤣Originally posted by 9kracing View PostNone of these people have been to SF I see

This... I have a crew of car guys in the Bay Area, who all have multiple collector cars and wrench on them, meet up and take those drives, all of it.Originally posted by amiao View PostI would keep the car until you at least move to CA. I would at least take the car, see what's available as far as storage, driving, fun, meetups, etc. and make my decision based upon what it is to have the car there, not based upon what you (or others) THINK or PROJECT what it MIGHT be like to have the car there. This will help you sleep easier with your decision no matter what.
And if you decide to sell it, you're in a place where someone will likely give you full value for it without even thinking too hard about it. Five grand here or there's isn't gonna change folks' lives in that area. Show up at CnC one morning with a For Sale sign in the car and that's that. And you still have all those other options.

If you have the disposable income, get it prepped for storage and let it be until you have a stronger feeling one way or the other.
Or just sell it.
New baby, house, job, city. You're going to be underwater for a few years. Sell it now, put the money into your favorite stock of the moment. Buy something fun in 4-5yrs that hasn't gone fully NLA and has twice the hp.
If you part it I'm TiAg and always shopping.

man......I would keep it.
of course I say that because when I was in your situation I did, but I had better storage options. I drove our first kid to day care for two weeks in the back seat and said fuck this shit and bought a 525 for dirt cheap (though it was shit).
It's been 12 years now of the car mostly being idle, but now that my kids are big enough to ride up front I can use it more often. It's currently getting the subframe done, and I'll finally have all 3 big items addressed. New Ohlins R&T are in the basement ready to be installed and I'm super excited to get to drive it again. It's probably not as nice of an example as yours, but it's mine, and I've owned it for 15 years now and I won't be selling it.
There's too much money and too many car people in SF for there not to be a collective group storing their cars somewhere.

If you left it alone I would say sell it now to someone who wants a clean no stories car.
But you went and modded it so keep it or part it first then sell it.
If it were me, I'd look into some daily drivers and chuck this into storage for a few months after the move.2004 BMW ///M3 Carbon Black/Cinnamon 6MT Dinan S2 FBO NA Build

Find some cheap storage on Neighbor.com and keep her. If I were you I would 100% regret selling the car especially after the level/condition you paid to bring it to. Don’t ask me how I know… did this with an e36 M3 and pure regret.
Heck, I’m in VA but I’ll buy a 4 post lift and for $250 a month I’ll store it up on the lift in a safe space on a trickle charger until you figure out what you wanna do long term. Kinda joking but actually not a bad idea. Maybe someone here close to you or in Texas would store the car for a reasonable price. I use the Neighbor app successfully for years and have a 1990s Camry sitting in the snow in my woods that pays me $150/month through the app to rot. My 0.02… I’d keep that car.

Thanks man! I've thought about storing it here in Houston for a year. Seems like car storage rates are ~$300 - $400 a month here, considerably cheaper than California.Originally posted by DepthPatrol View PostFind some cheap storage on Neighbor.com and keep her. It has been fun to watch all the replies, pretty much perfectly encompasses the trade offs and challenges I've been playing out in my own head the last few months!

Lots of great feedback already. To focus on the original questions: 1. I think you could get $35K for it. 2. I'd look at BaT first. For all its flaws that we mention here often, just has more activity and BMWs. I'm surprised they've maintained their position when C&B has a much better user experience IMO. 3. Your copy is good. I'd pull all the pricing out - those who know know those mods are high quality. Those who don't aren't likely buyers and may think you're trying to recoup all your costs.
Of course selling yourself means you maintain total control. But you also don't get the reach, promotion and need patience and time. That's what I did when I sold my E36 M3. It was mint but still took me 7 weeks. If you decide to part out, I'd be interested in your BBK! ;-) GL any way you go.Interlagos 06 M3, Autologic tune, Agency Power midpipes/exhaust, Fortune Auto coilovers, UUC SSK, Bluebus, Lightwerkz retrofit. New dad to new dad talk: DON'T SELL YOUR F-ING DREAM CARNow getting to the crossroad I find myself at. We've recently welcomed our daughter into the world and are moving from Houston to San Francisco later this year, where I likely will no longer have a garage to store the car in. I've thoroughly enjoyed the car and I'm debating whether it is time to let it go, at least for now.
I'm looking for the group's thoughts / feedback on the following:- Would you sell the car under similar circumstances?
When my daughter was about to be born: I had the exact same thought as you, I even went so far as to tell to my wife one night at dinner "You know, I'm thinking about selling the M3" - She nearly hit me upside the head. She knows I love this car and want to give it to my daughter one day when I can't see anymore and my legs don't work.
Then my daughter was born and about a month later, the insanity of pregnancy and child birth wore off and I could finally feel myself again: I could not wait to take her out on a drive and experience this car!!
3 weekends ago at nearly 4 months old we put her in her car seat in the back (man I could not believe seeing her in the car!! It was incredible!!) She was coo'ing for the first 5 minutes and then fell asleep. I did a 2nd gear pull at one point: not a peep out of her. My wife and I were loving the fact that we thought the exhaust + feel of the car put her to sleep - so with the stroller in the trunk, we took her out to our favorite lunch spot, fed her, and then took the long way home. It was f-ing awesome man.
So from one new dad to another: Keep your dream man. Dad has to be happy, and daughter will be happy as a result of seeing her dad happy.
If you're wanting something else, sick of the car, don't want to afford it anymore, I get that - but just consider what I mentioned here as soon as I read your post I knew I had to comment as I felt the same urge to sell it for some reason. I chalked it up to the feeling of a new sense of responsibility to my little girl.
And a thought - Imagine it's 2030, she's 4 years old, and you're teaching her about cars: how would you feel telling her about the M3 you used to have? How would you feel if you could put her in the car and go for a drive? Try to imagine those scenarios and then see where you're at in your mind.
For the not having parking for the car in SF - my best guess is if you're moving, it's for work, and if it's for work, more than likely you're making enough to afford a storage facility/parking spot somewhere to go to on the weekends and take it out for a nice drive in the canyons out there. Here's your first drive destination with it when you move - I have this place on my want-to-go list on google as it's a car enthusiast breakfast spot on the weekends with apparently incredible roads all around it - https://maps.app.goo.gl/DmYScw72WMsgPBqC8
Here are some parking options thatI did some research for you which I listed below - if you have time to write a sale ad, you can do some writing for your mind to figure out why you want to sell the car, and also figure out the best option for storage for yourself - I encourage you to do both before you sell the car that you put so much effort into and regret it later on.
All the best in your decision!
Storage options in SF - depending on your level of care, $250-500/month. For sure you can find a spot for $1k+ as someone above mentioned that will give you heat + power, etc. but to get the car there and off the street, this is what a quick search found

Paying 250 to a $1000 a month for storage plus insurance puts you upside down on a car so fast there is no way that makes sense for any serous length of time. Plus that storage cost will only rise, it won't stay the same.
Take that potential storage fee and insurance money and put it in your new kids college fund and sell the car. You can come back later. When I was raising my kids I left the car game almost entirely and focused on their future. The best decision I ever made. My oldest graduated with her Masters in accounting and zero debt thanks to me starting her college fund 25 years ago (and scholarships). My son is on the same path. No debt and life on an easier start. If you had enough money that this type of stuff didn't matter you wouldn't be asking the question.Last edited by oceansize; 01-30-2026, 06:55 AM.3.91 | CMP Subframe & RTAB Bushings | SMG (Relocated & Rebuilt) | ESS Gen 3 Supercharger | Redish | Beisan | GC Coilovers & ARCAs | Imola Interior | RE Rasp | RE Diablo | Storm Motorwerks Paddles | Will ZCPM3 Shift Knob | Apex ARC-8 19x9, 19x9.5 | Sony XAV-AX5000 | BAVSOUND | CSL & 255 SMG Upgrades | Tiag | Vert w/Hardtop
