I was driving from home and all of the sudden I lost power steering and the battery light came on. I asked myself, “If the car is still running it’s got to be a belt”. The car started to get hot so I stopped it before it went into the red. Opened the hood and it looks like the water pump pulley came off. The pulley isn’t broken and I don’t see the bolts. I was looking to eee if the bolts sheered off but it doesn’t look like that. I’m stumped. Does the pulley come off when the water pump fails?

If the clutch fan is still there and no coolant leaking, then the pump is fine.Originally posted by F2468c View PostOpened the hood and it looks like the water pump pulley came off. The four 10mm bolts fell off is the problem. Someone forgot to tighten them.

So I should check the pump to see if the bolts aren’t there (in other words it didn’t break off the heads of the bolts somehow) and if they aren’t there, and there is no coolant loss, then most likely it was that the bolts weren’t torqued correctly and just backed out over time?Originally posted by sapote View Post

I meant that they weren’t on the pulley, I’m not sure if the bolts sheared the heads off perhaps the body of the bolt is still inside the water pump holes.Originally posted by sapote View Post
