This is blatantly false. I'm in my late 20's and most enthusiasts my age and younger don't give a shit about these cars, G80's and B58's are all the rage bro'. My F80 is an absolute clout magnet, my E46 largely gets ignored outside of car meets unless its a much older enthusiast.

Crazy how everyone in here is shitting on stock E46 M3's. My car is modified but when I test drove one for the first time nearly 9 years ago I thought it was the greatest car ever. If a bone stock well maintained example in a great spec fell into my lap I'd drive it to the end of time.

I've ran through all of BMW's greatest hits, but I haven't touched Corvette's or 911's yet, but I'm still quite confident in saying the E46 M3 is in the top 5 of most fun cars you can own under $100k.

Makes sense, most can't drive a manual.

Come to SoCal and this will quickly change.

Everyone that's into cars knows about these cars even if they don't approach you and ask you about it.

I blame YouTubers entirely for this, bastards.

had a friends teenage nephew that, against all advice, stretched himself to buy an e46 m3. also had a neighbor's high school kid that had an e36 m3 through high school but his graduation gift was an f80 m4

continuing on the theme of choices I will never make for my kids, theres another HS kid across the street from me that has a fully built single turbo f87 m2 on drag radials

I can't help but laugh at the phrase, "clout magnet". The F/G's are turning into the new GD STi & Evo 8/9, generally speaking.

Strictly from a power & performance standpoint I feel like if I would have gotten my E46 (or E36) in HS/College like a few of the rich kids I knew that picked these up for $10-$15k 10-12 years ago, I...think I would have been fine? E46's quick and definitely make you drive like an asshole but I feel like 300 horse is fine.

Buying a kid any F or G chassis M car should be classified as neglect I'm not gonna lie. F8x are traction limited in stock form, and pick up another 100hp and tq with just bolt-ons and a tune. If I got given a 550whp, 3600lb car at 17 I'd have killed myself and probably one of you guys lmfao.

My M3 is my first car which I got at 16, and I never crashed it or anything. It’s doing A ok 13 years and it’s literally perfection tens of thousands of dollars later. The exterior was literally a 10/10 until a couple of weeks ago when I drove on some backroads with my buddies and ate rocks the entire time. Now idgaf again about the cosmetic condition and will go back to driving it properly.

Also…stock M3 is super boring when compared back to back with a properly modified M3. That’s why I got rid of the blue M3

Edit: Perfection aside from the grey wheels. Still trying to decide what design I want the second set of wheels to be (in silver)

I had shite cars and how you boys could afford that is beyond me. Insurance for teenagers is absolutely outrageous and I can't imagine what it must be currently for a teenager with any modern M3/M4.

I had 4 wrecks in 18 months. Two were totals. I was an absolute menace (I'm straight edge, always have been, my problem was speed control lol). Thankfully I was at least smart enough to have my problems on back roads plus it was 1987 so traffic was nil in comparison to today. I'm did not and would not buy my kid an expensive car. Absolutely no way no how. They can earn that and graduating high school or college doesn't count. You're supposed to do that.

At 18 back in 2001, I had an e36 328is. It was a fast car for its time (haha hard to believe now) despite it wasn't an M3. I too was an absolute menace with speed. Did 90 on the highway at all times, acted like everyone wanted to race me. It was a miracle I didn't kill myself honestly, but in part the car had something to do with that as well.

In 2002 right before college, it was not feasible for me to keep up with the e36 payments, so I ended up getting a 2G DSM (2nd gen eclipse with the NA Chrysler motor). I know I know hahaha. Remember Fast and the Furious was a big deal in the early 2000's. The thing was much slower than even the e36. But had nowhere near the safety tech of the e36. Didn't even have ABS. No ABS taught me good braking control that I use to this day, but it was also the reason I had my only 2 accidents. The first was on the highway in the rain. I was in the right lane doing the speed limit heading back to the dorms my freshman year in college. Semi was approaching in the left to pass. As he got close, my car picked up some standing water on the right side of the lane and started to gently hydroplane towards the right. I tapped the brakes, and the wheels instantly locked up. Car proceeded to do a 180 across the left lane in front of the semi, and I slammed into the highway divider. Luckily, I didn't get t-boned by the semi. Not sure how that POS car of mine would have handled that. Second accident, was in slow moving traffic on a two lane road in the burbs. It was the day after a snow. Car in front of me stopped suddenly, I hit the brakes, they locked up, and I slid into them at like 15mph.

Ultimately, what slowed me down was the death of a kid a few years younger than me that went to my church. He was 1 of 4 passengers. He was the only one that died, while another became a paraplegic and ended up dying of complications about a decade later. The other two were fine. They were driving recklessly on backroads in like a Camry or something. Went over a crest too fast and lost control of the car into a bunch of trees.

At the end of the day, how fast a car is only just one part of the equation. Yes, I agree handing an 18 year old a 500hp car stock is insane. Compared to what was considered "fast" in my day, everything on the road now is fast. If my kids are into cars, I often think about what would be a cool car that's both fun and safe. I can't imagine I'd want them in anything older than an e9X.
