Since I just recently switched my seat mounts, I thought I would write a summary to share my thoughts. Seat mounts is something that is generally only mentioned as a necessary evil to mount any bucket seat to our cars. But they can me much more. They determine your seating position in the car and are your direct connection to the chassis.
There is also a safety issue with these things. To me it is very relevant, since I live in Germany and this falls under safety relevant parts, which have to be approved by TÜV to retain street legality. (My car is mostly track, but since most trackdays are for street legal cars, I try to retain that.)
Since I put the Recaro PP in my car, I used the Recaro L-Brackets, Recaro Sliders, and Burkhart Engineering Base Plates as well as harness mounts. It is a widely used setup here and it works. Burkhart also has the necessary paperwork to obtain TÜV approval. However, I missed a bit of adjustability. Also the fitment is not spot on, so the sliders sometimes are not working smoothly.
After seeing some Animal Racing consoles on Racecars at an NLS Race, I went into contact with them. Eventually I decided to get them and see how they work. I did get a discount on them, so take that grain of salt for my review if you must. First test was on a trackday at the Nürburgring Nordschleife
1. They also come with material specs and an a calculation according to FKM Guidelines to proove they hold up.
2. They use their own designed L-Brackets for more adjustability. I was able to lower the seat and also give it more tilt backwards. This gave me a much more comfortable seating position, I feel more "integrated" into the car, if you can say this. With more tilt you are not pushed into the harness as much as your butt is taking some of it. Also those L-Brackets have slotted holes, so I was available to move the seating assembly much closer to the transmission tunnel, which made me almost centered to the steering wheel. This is a lot better better and makes such a big impact when driving increasing confidence.
>>> Useful Information for people using other buckets: since the L-Brackets has adjustability, they can take almost any bucket on the market. Animalracing confirmed to me that their consoles can mount Cobras or Sparcos. Thought I would ask them since I know some other seats are popular on these forums...
3. These mounts were used in some racecars that were involved in crashes during races. Seeing how the state of the mounts after the crash was a big selling point for me.
4. They come with an installation manual, if you get them, follow the steps in the manual. I tried a different order first, turns out I don´t know better...
5. Negatives: none. just I don't like the bolts being allen keyed. I told them they should consider moving to torx. But that's just my personal preference.
6. Further things: I used the existing Burkhart mounting for the lower harness and I mounted the side harnesses to the seat mounts. According to animal racing it is preferable to use welded mounting points to the chassis for harness. It is something I plan to change soon. Removing the mounting plate for the lower harness will also get me another 5mm of room for the seat to be even lower.
Overall I am very impresses with these and can definitely recommend.
Let me know if there's any questions, I'm not an expert at this but I will try my best...
