    420G install question

Getting the gearbox ready for re-install. Before I install the input shaft seal, I was looking at the base of the input shaft, and I saw that the inner seal/gasket has what appear to be two ears that stick out (See where screwdriver is pointed in photo).

Is that normal? If so, it seems the input shaft seal would not likely be able to get pressed in as far as it would otherwise. In other situations, I would be tempted to press these in, but that does not seem like the right thing to do here.

Poked around, found a YT vid of a guy rebuilding his E39 M5 420G. The seal/gasket looks the same on his gearbox during reassembly, so it looks like this is by design. Still funny looking.

Here is what mine looks like when I removed the bellhousing. You can see the circlip sticking up. Hope this helps!

From the pic, yours has no seal installed yet.

What you see is the lock rings to keep the input shaft bearing inner race on the shaft, no inner seal or gasket. Normal.

Thanks guys, this confirms my initial hunch to leave it be.

              Onto the gearbox re-install!
