Fast USB Charging in the E46 - OEM (Tesla)

I wanted a cleaner solution than the cigarette socket for charging my phone. Looking at aftermarket options I saw many reviews of overheating or even fires. This led me to search out an OEM solution that would allow for fast charging (USB-PD) of my phone. It turns out most OEM solutions do not support the USB-PD protocol that allows for higher wattage and if they do they are not self contained in a retrofit friendly package.

The Tesla 1656787-00-B module checked all the boxes:
    • Self contained in a small case
    • Only requires a simple power input
    • USB-PD - forum posts of Tesla users upgrading to this module are reporting 20+ watt output

    I purchased it here:
These genuine used Tesla Model 3 / Model Y USB-C charging hubs are perfect for adding fast phone charging to a custom EV build or replacing a failed factory unit. They are especially useful for 2021–2023 HW3 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, where Tesla removed the data functionality from the front U

I used this eBay harness but it looks like you can now get one right from the site above. You will cut one end of the harness off to wire it to the car:

Here is the pinout - Only 1 set of the power/ground have to be connected. The seller told me they are internally bridged

For the install I used the existing switched power that is part of the car phone harness under the center console. Don't do what the previous owner did and cut the phone harness - use a tap instead. Too late for my car.
    • Purple/White = 12v
    • Brown = Ground

Testing - it was able to charge my iPhone from 2% to 80% in 30min. No heat from the module or wiring. It should be noted this module is rated to 6amp, the phone circuit is rated to 5amp. The module would only ever consume that if it were charging two devices at max output. I feel comfortable only using this for a single phone.

It tucks in nicely behind the coin tray. If you ever have to change the charging cable that is all you have to remove.

That is an awesome upgrade. I'll be ordering the parts and connecting them to my Rennline mount. Do i need to add the plug and pin kit from the same seller and is it the same as the ebay kit that you mention above? Thanks.

I thought I was the only one using Posi-taps! Great write up!

You buy either the pin kit from the module seller or the eBay harness. Something to note on the eBay harness - the red/black wires do not correctly match power and ground pins - you will need a volt meter to identify the right wires to connect to the car.

Recently went through a "real" charger setup myself. I went the route of vastly overspeccing the 12v charger I was using, so it won't overheat. But I do like the idea of using factory parts!

.. I would want at least 30w PD, so it can full speed a magsafe puck.

Disclaimer: Many things written below I wrote over a decade ago. Many mods have been changed out several times, as new things on the platform have been discovered. E.g. eBay headers are installed at one point... something would never do now. So... consider this a coming of age journal as much as anything else :P Going to start

Very clean - how did you connect the cigarette socket charger behind dash? Did you open it up and solder wires to it?

I have something like the "power socket" below behind the dash:

I snipped down the prongs to match the factory size, and just moved the connectors from the factory cigarette lighter to this, thus not modifying any stock wiring :P

... and then 3d printed this contraption to zip tie hole it from being able to vibrate apart.

Snipping and soldering would be much cleaner/easier, if I didn't want to avoid permanently altering factory wiring.

This fits in the stock cig lighter location? I would love to get rid of it and install this instead LOL.

I'm not sure what you're asking, but this is what I replaced my cig lighter with (and it is an exact fit replacement for the cig lighter housing):
