    Refrigerant (PAG) oil in condenser and accumulator

    During the course of my current project it was necessary to remove the AC compressor. Because the car is 23 years old, and an OE Denso compressor is not unreasonably priced, I decided to replace it while I am there. I know that I need to drain the oil from the old compressor and make sure the new compressor goes in with the same amount of oil, but the plot thickens a bit because of previous AC work done on the car.

    A couple of years ago, when I replaced the cooling system, the condenser was so brittle the fins could not be cleaned of debris without them just floating away like dust, so I put in a new condenser. Because the system was open I also replace the receiver drier/accumulator. At that time I added no oil to the system to account for whatever was retained in the old condenser and drier and things worked just fine. Ice cold AC.

    Now I would like to get the oil level correct, however I am finding conflicting information regarding how much oil was likely retained by the condenser and drier I have already replaced. Because I have opened the system again, I am going to replace the drier again, so there is whatever oil is in the drier now as well. Can the oil in the drier be drained and measured like the oil in the compressor? If so, that would give me an idea of how much was in the first drier I replaced as well - unless of course the current drier is retaining less oil because the system is low on oil in general...

    I have not found anything in the TIS regarding how much oil each component retains, and the internet and AI estimates range from 10-30 ml for the condenser and 20-30 ml for the drier. Can anyone confirm the oil volumes retained by the condenser and drier?

      IIRC, the system holds about 6 oz. of oil. I would assume the condenser has about 1.5 oz of oil in it. So, add 4.5 oz of oil to the compressor/system. If you add it to the compressor, turn it over by hand several times after system closed to ensure you don't lock the compressor on start up.

          Should there be oil in the drier?

          Wouldn't oil spoil the silica in the drier?

            The Denso site, the OEM AC compressor supplier, states 160ml of ND-8 oil.

            DCP05039 - A/C Compressor manufactured by DENSO applicable for the BMW OE makes. Fully compatible with original part numbers 64526915388, 247300-0990

              The TIS indicates the entire AC system holds 160 +/-10 ML. The Denso site is definitely misleading.

              The Techs in our shop said the compressor will hold the most oil, followed by the drier. Surprised me because I wondered about the silica as well. We are not a BMW store, but the consensus here was to put whatever amount is in the old compressor into the new one plus 2 ounces and don't sweat it. I would still like some more exact numbers. Just don't know if I will get them.

                I think this is good advice. Exact oil amount is not critical, close is good enough. The desiccant in the drier is not effected by the oil or refrigerant, it only absorbs water.
