Fresh gas? Ideally the car has CARBOB (CA gas blend) or summer gas in it. Winter non-CARBOB is more volatile and flashes off so it loses octane.

Charge the battery with a tender to give it a full charge and start it. A modern engine will be fine to start after sitting for a year.

If one wants to put in the extra effort or if the car has been sitting longer than a year, pull spark plugs and pump fuse and crank it over to build oil pressure. Even doing this takes a while to build oil pressure. Better off just starting it with a fully charged battery, letting it idle for a minute or so while you look around the engine bay and drive off slowly letting it get up to operating temp. Once up to temp, stop at a gas station and top off with fresh fuel as Jae suggested.

Change the oil. Pull the fuel pump fuse, pull the spark plugs and crank for 20 seconds, let start rest, crank again for 20 seconds. The goal is to ensure the oil pump has prime and oil is reaching all the bearings without the bearings being under load. Replace plugs and fuses, go get fresh fuel and keep revs relatively low until you have run though a tank of fresh gas.

I got lucky. First crank didn’t fire off so I left it cranking for 5-10 seconds. Fired up instantly on crank 2 she’s is in great shape. Warmed up the tires to fix any flat spotting very quick

Too late I know, and you are likely fine, but I would spray fogging oil into each cylinder through the open spark plug holes prior to cranking to ensure there is oil coating the cylinder walls and piston seals. This prevents piston seal movement against dry cylinder walls. This is certainly prudent after cleaning out a cylinder with throttle body cleaner, and may still be prudent without cleaning for a car that has sat for a year.

I’ll be dealing with this in the near future as I’ve been outta country for the majority of the year. Did you do any of the extras that was recommended or did you just straight crank it after recharging the batt?
