I thought the Z4M 600w fan fit e46 m3? oem direct replacement for our mechanical fans?

No it doesnt, not even close. And it uses a different type of controller too.

Also, those fans are big money and not easy to find.

ya, its for my non m swap. they are really cheap now like $250. I found the page on E46, where everyone was swapping them into their non M e46's. https://www.e46fanatics.com/threads/...medium=organic

They have the same part number M Z4 and non M Z4 autos, 600W variant. The manual non M Z4's come with a different fan the 400W variant. Plus, bmw put the 600W fan in nearly every car it made in the following years. Shrouds are different model to model, but the fan remained the same.
