    Valve adjustment.

I am getting my valves adjusted next week. It’s being performed by a guy that runs a garage out of his home. He’s been and still is a bmw master tech for 20 years. He’s done lots of work to Bmw’s over the years. His home garage is impressive with eveyrhrint u can imagine. He even walnut blasted my 335i.

anyways for this job what hardware
do I need ? Should I pick up a valve cover gasket? Anything else?

is there anything else I should have him do that is closely related to this job? I did my plugs already.

I am actually excited for this. The car had 80k miles and had never been done. Should I pick up some
performance ? The car seems to run clean so I am doing this as preventive

You need everything pictured here but I would only buy the Genuine BMW Valve Cover gasket:

For anything other than the valve cover gasket Elring is fine.

If the tech doesn't have a shim kit you will need to get those as well:

I would buy gaskets from FCP so if they ever leak you can get them replaced for free under their lifetime warranty.

Non-BMW VCG is a crap shoot, might leak might not. The genuine part in this case is the best option.

Correct. That would be my advice. Good luck!

Have him check the tabs on the VANOS hub while he’s in there. Exhaust camshaft position sensor oring is easy to get to as well while the vcg and beauty cover are off

If you are going to buy the fcp kit (or base parts to buy off of it) that eacmen linked first, it is missing the 2 crush washers for the oil return pipe banjo. Get those separately pn 07119963129.

                  Youtube DIYs and more

All jobs done as diy - clutch, rod bearings, rear subframe rebush, vanos, headers, cooling, suspension, etc.

PM for help in NorCal. Have a lot of specialty tools - vanos, pilot bearing puller, bushing press kit, valve adjustment, fcab, wheel bearing, engine support bar, etc.

He just informed me he has all the gaskets.

ok. Great. I’ll ask him to check the tabs on the vanos.

Thanks for pointing that out. I told fcp they needed to update that kit but I guess they never did.

Put a camera under the hood, Ive heard of shops charging for valve adjustment and not even performing them because it’s a hassle.

I had been through that (actually they charged my sister for 2 new front struts and I examined and still saw the original old units.)

should remove the cam spline sleeves 12 bolts: check if they are loose; if tight and in good condition, then clean the threads and use red Loctite and bolt them back. (If they loose and back out, then they will be sheared off and you end up with a damaged head with bent valves and bruised pistons.

Depend on how you drive the car, you also should modify the stock vannos pump disk: drill 2 new smaller holes for less clearance with the driving tabs.
