    Aftermarket steering rack?

    Hey all,

I recently threw in a yellow tag steering rack in my M3, the mod is 10/10 worth it, its so much more accurate and feels amazing. However, apparently it is leaking and I'd prefer to address this rather than later. I have my original M3 rack and a leaky yellow tag rack that i'm debating on selling, but I'd need to source a different one first.

I was looking on Rockauto and it seems like 330ci steering racks are abundant with aftermarket options. The only issue however is differentiating between a zhp/zsp/Canadian M-sport/Yellow tag rack among the few aftermarket options. Does anyone have experience with these?

I was as well looking at Rack doctor, who seems to have remanufactured racks at a good price with core exchange. Should I take this route instead?

    Thanks in advance.

I can tell you my experience with rackdoctor, since that is where I sourced the zhp rack. I've been running it for about 20k miles, including track, without issues. It came fully rebuilt with fresh seals, rings, boots, etc. He has a lifetime warranty.

I think on the old forum some folks didn't have a great experience with rackdoctor in the past, I don't remember why, since I only joined the forums around 2018.

I didn't return my stock rack as core, I ended up giving it to a guy in socal whose stock rack blew up.

I’m super curious about this too. It’s on my list to do in the next year or so

712 part number is what you want.

Thing is sometimes auto parts store companies that buy rebuilds can sometimes get mix n matched components in them. So although same ratio some things like torsion bar changed. So your ZF .712 Yellow rack isn’t internally exactly spec.
So your best bet is to go to a independent rack rebuilder. If you can, best to have him rebuild your rack you send him (if you can deal with downtime). Otherwise make sure it’s a legit ZF .712 rack (actually not rare).

I think if I remember correctly about 20-25 lbs boxed.

Just bought a 712 from Australia. Is called lpsr, luckasz power steering racks, .. pretty reputable company over there. 5* rating and all. And the company totally works with you. They specialize in purple tags as people love them better over there but they made a yellow one for me. I hope it's to spec. Still waiting on delivery because of how covid-19 is treating us. No core deposit though,,,womp womp.

That's in Australian dollars pal. I thought the same until I contacted them. I paid 648$ I believe for mine. With shipping and all. I think I even got away with a free credit card percentage purchase because I think it's like 3% more for pay pal or some sh@& like that.

+1 for Lukasz he is legit - I got a Purple Tag that was fully rebuilt through him for $600AUD (funnily enough he wouldn't give me a core refund either but then 3yrs later when I advertised my stock M3 rack on Gumtree he was the one that came and bought it so I ended up with a "core refund" anyway hahah). The Purple Tags are more appealing to us RHD guys bcoz of price... I think the only good linear steering rack for us other than the Purple Tag is the CSL/CS rack (which I believe are a Blue Tag) but they are crazy expensive due to rarity... you get 90% of the result for half the money with Purple Tag... only concession is the steering weight but I will be dropping my power input by 25% with some of Volkes shims soon

I read your post and sent them a message. Since august 2020 the price of this rack has increased $250. I’m not saying their racks are no good, but why such a high price increase. I would stay clear as these guys are trying to pull the “covid card” to justify a price increase. Almost $900 USD shipped for a rebuilt rack is absurd.

I know the yellow tags have problems with the MK20. Same with purple tag?
