    Options for headers/sec. 1

Hey guys. I really didn’t want to have to ask questions that I could find by researching, but after losing the m3forum, the important threads regarding this topic are gone.

I know that I forsure want Supersprint V1 headers, which will pair well with my Supersprint race muffler. I have no problem paying the price for the headers (somewhere around $1500) especially with the deals. However, the extra $2k for the section 1 really makes me wonder if I should be putting the money somewhere else.

Months ago I read on the m3forum that some guy made a custom section 1 which allowed him to save money on the expensive Supersprint section 1. My question is, are there any substitutes for the Section 1 that I could use and save the money for other things? Or does the v1 headers NEED the Supersprint section 1? Will there be any compromises? Where can I find one??

Any information would be much appreciated. If I need to spend another 3-4K on my exhaust, I will, but I’d prefer not to. Haha. Cheers.

You found SS v1's for $1500? The cheapest I've seen is $1,999 on ecs tuning right now. I was going through the same thought processes as you with trying to find a way to financially make sense of it. I found the SS section 1 without cats for around $475 which brings the total to around $2500+tax. Paying someone to make a custom section one would mean that at most you could save a couple hundred unless you were talking about welding in your own cats too.
    Garage:
2002 BMW M3: Slicktop jetblack/cinnamon. SMG to 6-speed. Arc-8's. Koni yellows/Dinan springs. Macht elbow. Megan headers. Stock section 1+AR20. SCZA section 3.
1998 Mercedes E300 Turbodiesel: Pizza bag warmer.

Agreed, except for black Friday deals, its rare those headers are under 2k. Then add shipping...

I believe the guy that did that on M3f bought the uncatted ss section 1 and added cats.

That said, there’s a reason the catted ss section 1 costs a bunch— if uses high end cats, that hold up to track use.

$1500 was just a rough estimate, and yeah I probably was still thinking about the Black Friday price... it is more like $2000. Why are the catted ones so much more money?

They use very high end (HJS) cats, that flow well and hold up to the heat of tracking.
(by contrast, my stock cats failed at 60,000 miles because of the heat of tracking)

Schmiedmann has them for approx $1,500 at the moment, and that includes freight: https://www.schmiedmann.com/en/produ...product=044001

I've bought two Supersprint pieces from them and they ship DHL; it got to me in a few days - faster than a US-based company. There does appear to be a back order at the moment.

Schmiedmann also has the catted oversized section 1 (#044002) for a good price. Someone yesterday posted ECS had this piece for $1,700 and it looks like Schmiedmann adjusted their pricing overnight.

For the 2 pieces, with freight, I am seeing $3,235. A no-brainer, in my mind. You're getting the best components that will endure (buy once) for a very good price.

Agree. Not worth buying catless pipe for $500 only to spend $1k putting nice cats in. Maybe when the catted pipe was $3500, but not at 1700-2k.

What's the estimate on how much VATS would be for shipping it to the US? Thanks for the info and link!

It's costing me $73 for Schmiedmann to ship SS V1's to the west coast of Canada. I'd imagine it would be less than that for your request.
You are also only charged VAT if you live in the EU (correct me if I'm wrong) - North Americans aren't subject to this. ^

FWIW right before M3forum went down (THANK YALL for making a new one!).. I went the euro headers/ double stock resonated section 1 route and wound up very very happy.. It does smell for sure but doesn’t bother me.

Thanks for the responses. Exactly what I needed to hear. I’ll DIY it to save some money. Then I’m only 1 part away from a full supersprint!
