    Scraping noise from the engine-help

    Hi m3 Fam,

I took the car out this morning and everything went fine till I stopped to get lunch and came back to the car and started her up. There was a heavy grinding noise coming from the engine. I quick shut off the car to take a look and everything looked okay. Started her up again and the metal grinding noise occurred again. I popped open the hood and examined everything. After 30 sec the sound went away. Has anyone ever ran into this issue? Any help is much appreciated.

    service done:
rod bearing - done 200 miles ago
changed all the belts - done 200 miles ago
vanos done as well - haven’t done the chain tensioner. Part is being held up
    new engine mounts
    valve adjustment
    mileage 80k
    year 03.5
    6 speed

Car drives fine. No check engine light and consistent idle.

Record the sound? Could be a number of things.

was trying to but the sound isn’t there anymore. I’m hoping that’s a good thing..

My starter started doing this intermittently a couple months before it finally failed. My guess is the solenoid is probably failing to retract the starting wheel from the flywheel and what youre hearing is the flywheel just forcefully spinning your starter

Thanks for the info. That’s pretty much what I concluded too. Since it happened I haven’t been able to replicate the noise and no issue.

I agree with the starter theory.
