SMG yellow cog light, unable to start car

So I know this topic has been beaten to death over and over but it would be nice to get some fresh information. Today I was driving and all of a sudden my car shifted from 2nd to neutral, then it shut off on me. The car will not engage in any gear and will flash N on any attempt to engage. It also does not start and makes no effort to start either. My best guess could be the salmon relay but I am unsure if it could be something more severe like the pump. Any help would be great.

Possible stuck in gear so it won't turn over meaning the pump may not be building pressure. Pull codes. Let it sit and then listen to how long it takes for the first prime. Hook up to INPA and watch the time it takes to depressurize after building pressure. Should be slow. Use INPA/DIS to check accumulator as well. Salmon Relay should be replaced if it has been a while.

In INPA you can also check the hood switches. Could be GPS if you have been experiencing slow shifts or skipped gears. Compression springs also possibility (but I don't think likely as this is usually a shift issue, not a no start issue).

Swap the relay before going fatter, it’s cheap.

Changed the relay, still doesn’t start. I can hear the fuel pump and I think the smg pump priming as well. When I try to crank I can hear something priming, I think it’s the smg pump.

You have hit the point where you are going to need a code reader. INPA would be best so you can see pump pressure, read codes, etc.

I'm assuming your SMG cog light (this indicates an error within the SMG system) is on?

If you aren't really sure you are priming you can:

              1. Disconnect negative battery terminal
              2. Remove salmon relay
              3. Reconnect negative battery terminal
              4. Use a jumper wire to connect the pins in the photo together for just a few seconds so you can hear if the pump clicks on.
              5. This will force the pump motor to run. Remember do this for just a few seconds.

After using INPA to diagnose the issue, I got code 59.

Roughly translates to “control clutch”, which is clutch actuation. Ranges from GPS, slave cylinder, and few other things.

Engine code that is displaying is code 17, which translates to SMG switching sequence.

PLCD Sensor is in your clutch slave cylinder. Can't be purchased separately. You have to buy the entire clutch slave, roughly $275 plus/minus a little plus replacement fluid. Requires cracking open the hydraulic system which will then require a bleed. To bleed you will need a version of INPA with the full suite of SMG special tests. Of course, like all things diagnostic you could replace it only to have another problem on top that issue.

When I had this code it was indeed the clutch slave cylinder.

I was playing around with trying to get the gears and reverse to engage and the 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6 shifts but when I tried to engage a gear it displayed the error that the gear couldn’t be engaged

Clutch slave is relatively easy to replace- remove transmission brace to lower transmission and you should have clear access to R/R. Remove salmon relay before opening the hydraulic line. I just purchased one from getbmwparts. after you button everything up run the INPA clutch bleed test.

                            UPDATE:

After a bit of time has passed, I finally was able to fix the problem which ended up being the slave cylinder. Car runs just as before. Thanks to everyone who helped!
