    Gearbox part number

Before I slide under my car to check, does anybody know what the Getrag/BMW part number is on our transmissions/gearbox alone?

Real oem shows 23002229721 but I think that also includes the bell housing?

I am still having issues with what I think is the synchro going into reverse. I have found that if I slowly release the clutch pedal while pushing the shift lever into reverse I can get in most of the time when the synchros decide not to work, but it’s not a pleasant noise not correct. I am looking at rebuilding the trans or just swapping.

One came up on Facebook listed as a “BMW M3 6 Speed Transmission... fits 4.4L V8” which would be out of a 540i w/ an M62 (4.4L V8). I know that isn’t the correct bell housing for the S54.

On the side there are a few part numbers of interest. The one off of the gearbox itself is 226.0.0276.92. The other part numbers that are shown are 226.0.0161.91 and 226.0.0274.90. I imagine it is possible to just remove the gearbox portion and mate it with the bell housing currently in my car.

This whole idea probably isn’t the best since I can keep looking for a true e46 m3 trans that doesn’t require swapping things over, or just go to a transmission shop and look at a rebuild.

    Thanks!

You can swap bellhousings on the transmissions... .pretty easy effort, as long as they are the same...i.e. SMG to SMG or Manual to Manual. You can make the other work, but will require some mods. Not terribly difficult if you know what you are doing.
You do run a slight risk of the input shaft bearings not matching up, as the bellhousing contains the balls and one race, while the gearbox is has the other race.

Tranny and bell housing come together as one part number, as swapping bell housing will lead to input bearing damage.

Re to reverse shifting issue, try this: step on clutch and shift into gear quicker with less delay. Try to vary the delay time -- faster or slower -- to see this improves. I think the synchro blocking the shift bc the input had stopped spinning and the blunt gear teeth were blocked.
