Car was regularly serviced, oil always allowed to warm up before putting my foot down. Car was driven hard on the street.

Wow, that's very unfortunate, mate. Mine is an '04 with June production date. I replaced my bearings not too long after I bought the car at ~135k miles. The lead was worn but wasn't showing any copper.

5 of the bearings in mine were not showing any copper, but bearing # 3 was worn through the lead and copper.
