Removing is not bad but installing can be an issue. Here is the solution. Loosen the idler bolt about 2mm for the key to be off from the slot on the oil filter housing. With that you want to turn the idler acentric base to get the idler pulley as high as possible. This provides more belt for routing it, and then you turn the idler base back so the key falls into the slot, bolt it down and done.

There is no issue in stalling the belt that requires the idler to be loosened, if that is the case you have other issues. In fact on S54s I do them from the bottom by hand. Grab the belt between the crank and p/s pulled and slowly pull down, this will depress the tensioner. While in this position reach up and grab the belt between the p/s and alt pulleys.
