I do not know what happened beyond what is shown in the photo. Chunks of the bearing cage and ball bearings fell out as I pulled the trans away from the bellhousing.
I only drove the car a very short distance prior (from the tow truck to the work area) and did not notice or hear anything weird at that time. The owner didn't mention anything either.
The outer race stays with the BH, the inner race with the input shaft, in most cases. If the BH not parallel with the transmission during pulling, the bearing could cock causing the plastic balls spacer to break. There must be part number on the races.
I bought what seems to be the last one available, shortly after installing my bell housing over a year ago. I still have not installed mine, but my noise hasn't changed. The next time I drop my transmission I'll be addressing it. I got mine from 123bearing.com Product # was 577318A-FAG
Deep Groove Ball Bearing 577318A-FAG, Inner diam. 45 mm, Outer diam. 90 mm, Width 21 mm
any place that specializes in seals and bearings will get this variation. doesn't need to be a FAG. just give them the details and they will point you to the right one.
