Trunk wont unlock when the engine is running

Every time i need to put something in the trunk i need to turn the engine off for the trunk release button to unlock the trunk. Is this normal operation? Ive tried switching the lock in the trunk to both positions but neither helps.

Have you tried holding the button down longer? Or using the fob button while it’s in the ignition

When I hit the trunk unlock button, my passenger door lock will also unlock.
If my passenger door is locked, the trunk will not unlock from the trunk button, but will open if you hit the key fob twice.
Never checked it with the engine running.
Do you have an unlock button below the A pillar in the drivers footwell?

it could be a safety feature, and may or may not be coded.

Yes, neither work while the car is running- only when its off.

I'll have to see if trying it with the passenger door unlocked does anything. And yes, its the unlock button in the footwell. It does seem to me to be coded or something, as it doesn't seem that the button or mechanism is faulty, but rather, it only opens under the given conditions

My trunk release buttons work while the engine is running.
The lift shocks for the trunk lid are weak, so the weight of the lid relocks the lock.
There's is a bodge involving the insertion of a small spring on one of the lift shock stalks which assists the shock and keeps the lid ajar so that it can be lifted.
If you can hear no lock activity when you press the unlock button during idle, you have a problem.

I'm afraid I have to agree. I just wish I knew where to begin troubleshooting this.

I'd start at the trunk switch. See if you have 12V. Then ohm-out the switch actuation.

If you don't have 12V - that takes you one way. If the switch is balky - then you can either clean contacts or replace it.

If you don't hear the trunk motor at all:
1, look for voltage at the motor.
if no voltage, it is possible to jump the motor using a direct connection to the battery.
If still no motor, that may be your problem.
2,The switch in the footwell is actually an afterthought.
people have added the switch and harness to the car.
so, another voltage check, and check the fuses.
3, same would apply to the console switch.

Check fuses then the motor if it is silent.

Thanks for the suggestions but both the switch and the motor work fine- given that the engine is not running. Something else is creating a condition when if the engine is running, the switch essentially becomes inoperable

Did you check for codes? INPA and ISTA give chassis related codes and it could help with troubleshooting. When my window relays started sticking in the GM5, ISTA pointed out that there were codes for the GM5. Before that, I was trying to figure out if it was the door lock actuator or the GM5. I had someone replace the relays in the GM5 and it corrected the locking issue.

I get errors whenever I try to access the body module (bothin NCS and INPA). To add on, the check control lights in the dash have never worked since I bought the car (along with the trunk issue). They very well may be related and I should probably start with having the module inspected it sounds like
