I just got my rebuild parts for the differential but I’m second guessing installing the free play shim delete. Does anyone have appreciable miles on the shim without incident? Opinions are welcome as well.

Racing diffs free play shim, yay or nay?

Apparently it's bad. I do agree that shoving the spider gears together is not the best idea. The one case we have of this allegedly causing failure has no circumstances or context around it. Before taking yours apart, measure the lash on the gears. Also check the clearances of the old clutches versus the new. Diffs absolutely need some play so I'm not crazy about the idea of a spring washer in there. This is my Unbuild Journal and why we need an oil thread

I'm getting the impression the Diffsonline still decreases the lash and it'd be great to have an idea of what shim to actually use. The clutch pack being thicker may be enough with reusing the old shim. It's hard to get a dial indicator on the spider gears to check but I'll do my best. What Dan said makes sense but he literally has one diff that he's done and they are competition. This is my Unbuild Journal and why we need an oil thread
