Sensor short - causing ghost error.

First, my tire sensor light popped on my dash. Confirmed tire pressure on all (4). Figures faulty pressure sensor. Not worried about it will address at a later date, I know my pressures are good.

A couple weeks later, I noticed my EOT gauge randomly spiked to 300f then back down to 130f. This only happened once, thought it was odd. Tire pressure light still illuminated on the dash. Temp from that point always consistent no spikes.

a couple weeks later, yellow oil level sensor lit up while driving after about 30 minutes. Odd. Happened a few times. Obviously confirmed physical level - all good. Randomly light would stay illuminated yellow when shutting off and removing key but wouldn’t pop up at all while driving. Oil level is good. Tire pressure gauge still on dash since day one that it came on regardless of reset via button hold.

Ordered a new oil level/temp sensor for replacement on my next oil change along with fuel filter and some other minor maintenance.

I fired her up after I performed the service. No more tire pressure light illuminated.

I have about 250 miles on it since the replacement of the oil temp / level sensor and the tire pressure light has never came back and my oil level light hasn’t come on or had anything inconsistencies.

So, from my experience, a faulty and/or shorted oil level temp sensor can throw faulty codes. This is interesting to me, because my company works on high end German engineered machines, and this is also a thing in our world. Not saying this is specific to German engineering but definitely notable.

Has anyone else experienced one unrelated faulty sensor causing ghost errors on your car?

I am currently setting up NCS expert and INPA to have a visual into the M brain, but I am not sure if this would’ve been made visible on either of those platforms?

INPA may tell you something, NCS is used for coding so I would focus on INPA. ISTA or DIS may be the best bet as far as software finding you some useful data like on a short etc. however getting DIS or ISTA up and running isn't as easy as INPA but highly worthwhile imo.

Sorry that wasn't too terribly useful, good luck.

We don't have TPMS sensors. That's a possible cluster issue unless wheel speed, coolant temp and oil level all meet before the cluster. Wheel speed go straight to ABS so that's out.

Interesting. I didn’t know tire pressure measured via ABS DCS and wheel speed. Either way, the oil/level temp sensor fixed the issue of the low tire pressure light appearing on the dash 100% of the time.

Sometimes electronics are just weird. They do things that are just weird. I've been seeing alot of CAN faults lately. It's frustrating because it's so easy to overthink it or miss it. I might take a gander at the wiring diagram and see what relation these things all have.

I learned there are tpms sensors when I changed my front tires. I popped the tire off and when I went to exchange the valve stem, that's all there was. No sensor.

Keep an eye on battery performance.
A dodgy battery presents various disparate gremlins.
As does a sub par engine ground.

^This. I’d also check battery and ground connections.
As for the tire pressure light, you’d be surprised how many don’t reset it correctly.
