    Transmission puking fluid

Hey all. Running into an issue where the car is puking a puddle of transmission fluid after a drive or idling for awhile.

I did just have a shop replace the entire transmission and clutch/flywheel. Other than the fluid drain bolt, is there anything else I can check for when I get the time to jack the car up high enough to crawl under?

    Yes, I’m 100% sure it’s transmission fluid.

So it is an unknown new tranny? I don't think the fill/drain bolts causing the leak, as if it is then the leak should be continuing and not just after driving or idling.

Sounds like either over filled, or input or output shaft seal leaking. But could the temp or speed sensor, or reverse switch not bolted tight. Check also if the top vent is clogged.

Pull up a diagram of the transmission and look and every part you can plug in or seal on it. Using the diagram for reference will really help in such a terrible place to try to find a leak. Was it new or used out curiosity?

There is a relief on top the transmission. Might be puking out of there.

If it's that much fluid, it should be pretty easy to track down just by looking...

You say "waiting for the time to get underneath." Why do you have to take this on yourself? Wouldn't you want to ask the shop to look into their potential mistake, and do so ASAP?

Absolutely not. I dread having to use a shop at all, however with a torn rotator cuff a clutch/flywheel job isn’t on the cards on jack stands so it was a necessary evil.

It appears the input shaft seal is what’s causing the excessive transmission oil leak. Found a new shop that I’ve communicated my OCDness too and will be using them when I’m back from vacation. I’ll never re-use a shop that made an error or over looked replacing or recommending replacement of $xx seals..

It’s the saying, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice...

Who tracked down and purchased the donor transmission?

It is possible the input seal just started to leak. Shop possibly had nothing to do with it. It is covered up by the guide tube. Unless the replaced the guide tube or did something crazy like drop the trans, not sure how you can blame the shop for a leak from the input seal.

The shop could have suggested replacing the input, output and selector rod shaft seals.

If the shop did replace the input seal, if you don’t know how to do it, it’s easy to f up. Ask me how I know 🤦 don’t insert it till it stops else it will get torn up from the inside out in short order.

Update: it was the input seal.
