    Oil Pipe hanger alignment

So I’ve started the process to reassembling my engine and when trying to tighten down the crank I noticed my hangers were bent and had to straighten them out. I got them to clear the crank but when mocking these up with the pump I feel like there is too much slant down on the pipe and it’s too far out.

Does anyone know if the pipe needs to fit snug in the pump or can it be off some?

I just am wondering if this bit needs to be flush. If I have to spend $60 for new hangers so be it but I’d rather not if I don’t have to

      Nice colour haha! Looks great!

My oil pipe brackets were bent so I ordered two new pieces. I didn't want to risk using bent pipes and one of the pipes being off.

As for the pick-up tube entering the oil pump, it doesn't need to sit flush. It should have a (rubber?) o-ring. Once the new brackets are on, the pipe won't be moving.

I noticed you haven't installed the rod caps? Are the pistons/rings/rods in the block?

After installing and locking down the crank main caps, I installed the pistons (with oe spec npr rings - make sure you orient the rings correctly if you're putting new ones!), attached the caps and torqued everything to spec.

The oil pump and associated piping went on after the rotating assembly was sorted.

          1) The oil pipe holding brackets were installed wrong: the one near #5 cylinder should have the horizontal hole. They are not interchangeable.
          2) The bearing cap bolts should have some grease coating under the head so they don't turn the pipe brackets and bend them. Only bolting down the brackets without the pipe at this step. Install the oil pipe after the crank bearing caps were torqued down.

Edited: I double check your pic and it looks like you have the brackets location correct.

They are in the proper position. #5 does have the horizontal hole. I was test fitting these before hand since the brackets were twisted from original removal and I wanted to make sure the brackets were in a good position before final torque down.
The shadow of the pipe behind the bracket makes it look off.

I’m not gonna lie, I saw yours and it motivated me to find a fun color for the block. After a long time looking at the colors I still settled on that one. Absolutely love it.
I still have that o ring on the pipe, I just don’t want to risk having lower oil pressure or a worse off pump because this is off center. I guess I’m just going to suck it up and buy some new hangers. Because of the good ole “while I’m in there”.

As for my pistons and rods, I was really hoping to push to get the engine done and reassembled this weekend but it seems the hangers had other plans. I had to slightly oversize my bore to 87.5mm so I went with the JE pistons @ oe compression. I will be getting these sized up and assembled the second I can actually get this dang crank locked down.

Just for clarification I threw the pipe and pump on just to test fit my untwisting of the hangers. I did not final torque and of this stuff yet.

I actually just rebuilt my bottom half and had issues with the bolt alignment(didn't realise the brackets are different). Now I am not getting any oil pressure(cranked with plugs out). Going to have to drop the sump and check the brackets as I think that is my problem.

Oh gosh that sucks so much that happened! Atleast you caught it before you started running the car!

It seems that these have a tendency to twist when you remove them, so even if you put them on properly yours may be twisted and won’t fit properly.
After this I think this seals the deal that I’m buying new brackets. I just ordered some from fcp but if I were you I’d buy some before they go out of stock. It looks like a lot of the other sites have them on backorder.

Thanks, I plan to pull it on Saturday and check it, I have more brackets can try if they are twisted but I think I may have mixed them up, I don't know.

This doesn't help now, but I see the brackets twist/bend on disassembly often so as a rule I just always replace them now. I've run into the situation you are in now in the past and it's a pain. I have no other useful advice, sorry.

Thank you for the advice, better late than never!! Sadly I ordered the brackets but it seems fcp shipping times are seriously delayed. We play the waiting game again!

It's kind of good to know you see these bend on disassembly often. I don't remember twisting/bending mine, but they weren't suitable for re-installation lol. I purchased them from my local dealer. Convenience is sometimes worth the extra $$
