Cam chain moved while doing Vanos and cam bolts...Doomed?

So apparently I didn't keep enough tension on the chain and it has shifted and my attempts to "fix" it have made it worse. The cams and crank are locked in there proper position and hubs/sprockets are marked. If I reassemble it and can get them to line up am I good to go or is the chains position just as critical. Thanks!

Explain what you mean “while doing VANOS”. Is the VANOS removed? Are you replacing the hubs? Cam bolts being replaced? Have you inspected the upper timing chain guide on the exhaust side?

Either way looks like you will need the timing bridge tool to get it back into time.

All of the above. The Vanos is removed as are the hubs. I installed new cam bolts (the allen bolts under the hub) and a new upper chain guide. I have the timing bridge tool and the cams are locked in there proper position and the crank is pinned at TDC.

As long as you have the crank at TDC you’re fine. The chain does not have to be in a paticular position as long as there is tension on the chain.

Proceed with the Beisan instructions and you should be fine.

Hub/sprocket marking is useless. Cannot rely on the marks for proper timing.

As long as there is no chain slack on the right side (vu from front) and the crank and cams timing are good then it's OK regardless of chain link position.

Cool. Just have to pick up some new sealing washers and hopefully can get it back together this weekend. Thanks!
