Do not start that John Deere again until you tear town. It sounds like the valves are hitting the pistons.

I believe it’s the vanos hub. I need to get it back in the car and verify. Hopefully soonOriginally posted by Mspir3d View PostFigure this out yet?

All valves are within spec. Re checked the last night. One thing I did find I think the vanos is making noise. I bought a “lightly used” unit. The hub is good. But i think the oil pump disk is a little worn. The holes measured 10.6 mm. I put the engine back on a stand and started working on it there. Honestly I think the shiny bits in the oil is the ring getting seated. There’s no chunks or anything.Originally posted by Mspir3d View PostThat's scary af. Was the oil pump sprocket put on right? It's offset. If I recall correctly someone on M3forum put it on backwards and it rubbed.

Interesting. Definitely worth checking thought. Everything timing wise is new. As is the oil pump. I’m going to update post #5 with everything changedOriginally posted by heinzboehmer View Post
The bolts holding my driver's side timing chain guide sheared, meaning the guide was completely loose inside the engine. There was definitely a rattle, but it was only really present at about 3000 rpm and sounded very similar to a VANOS rattle. At idle, the car sounded like everything was perfectly fine.

Could be. Will note though. Before it actually ran, I was having some starting problems (aem related) and it would run for 2 seconds and . As soon as it fired up even for a second the knock was there.Originally posted by Ruley View PostCamshafts turn half the speed of the crankshaft. Kinda sounds like something is rubbing.
