    e46 m3 Engine mount question

Im getting ready to replace the rod bearings in my e46 M3 so i want to do the engine mounts at the same time. Any thoughts on black forest industries or IRP mounts? I already have gear rattle from a solid light weight flywheel and poly shift carrier bushing. I dont really want to create too much more nvh but i would like something better then stock. Anyone have experience with either of these brands?

Anything other than stock makes more noise than stock. The more stiffer they are they stock, the more noise they make than stock.

What are you actually hoping to gain? IMHO, the drivetrain mounts (engine/trans/diff) are the last place you should increase stiffness. Very little functional benefit, and the largest NHV penalty of anything on the car. I wouldn't do it on a car that sees any street use.

Do the guys that track their car run stock mounts? Beyond the sage advice already provided above, the answer would tell you whether there is any benefit (I think the answer for many is yes they do).

Solid mounts don't wear out and make the chassis marginally more rigid, so they make sense for a race car... but would be unbearable on a street car.

Lots of people do all sorts of dumb things to their car because they track it 2-3 times a year-- doesn't mean it's a good idea. They're certainly not in any way necessary to track the car. I've got 20,000+ track miles on my car at this point, with stock drivetrain mounts.

Upgrade over stock and nothing crazy would be the GroupN mounts. But since those are super expensive now Rogue Engineering and Bimmerworld have their replica versions. They utilize the stock design but just not fluid filled.

Those sound like more of what im looking for. Anyone here try the 034 Motorsport mounts from ECS Tuning? They seem like a similar option to the Bimmer World mounts which are currently out of stock. Also wondering if they will cause any clearance issues between my factory strut tower brace and turner intake. That being said i like the sound of the 5mm shorter Rouge Engineering mounts but they cost about twice as much which seems kinda ridiculous. Another thing i noticed with my car, and i dont know if this is engine mount related for sure, is that the front sway bar is only about 1mm from my oil pan.

Considering the GroupN mounts from BMW were $980 a pr that’s not so ridiculous. I currently have these.

FYI if your current mounts are old and worn they will sag. New stock mounts could certainly raise the engine.

Group N mounts were actually discontinued by BMW, so anything still around is remaining stock. May explain the high prices. If you consider them, just go with the bimmerworld full rubber mounts. Same thing and lower price.

But with engine mounts you don't get much nvh increase, just a bit of vibration at idle.

Just be careful with the tranny mounts. I used to have 95 AKGs in there, made the entire chassis vibrate when lifting at 5k+.

I have since gone to a softer polies on the transmission and now the noise is OK. Louder than stock but OK. Engine mounts are still solid.

Looks like ill be trying the 034 Motorsports mounts from ECS since the bimmer worlds are out of stock. Ill let you all know how it goes. Also going to get a set of adjustable front swaybar links to correct the clearance issue between the bar and pan. I suspect this car was lower with a set of springs at some point because i cant even fit 1 finger between the tire and the lip of the fenders. I need to check the stock ride height spec i guess.

The Group N mounts been that price for 10 years now. BMW thinks very highly of themselves for some reason. They’re made by Corteco, so don’t see the reason why.

I inquired about these at BMW directly 4 years ago and they said that this part number is discontinued. Maybe ECS or Turner source them directly with Corteco, but BMW does not sell them anymore.
Even if some stock came from BMW at one point, it is probably a price that says "we really don't want to make this part anymore".

Sorry my bad for confusion. Yes I am aware they’re a part listed as NLA. I was responding the price was high when they were being stocked and sold even back then.

I mentioned Corteco because they still make M3 mounts and have tooling.

I have the BW version in my car and honestly didn't notice any NVH increase. Granted, it's a 1/2 caged track only car, but I still expected to notice a little bit. It did lift the engine up a bit, which was good as clearance with the FSB was minimal, if any, prior to the swap.

I have a set of Bimmerworld engine mounts for sale. PM if you're interested.

One thing to keep in mind with worn engine mounts on track is if the engine starts to move around a lot, then there is a chance for the engine fan to contact the radiator during dynamic movement.
