    Xenon Lights

I was advised by my mechanic to not replace my xenon bulbs with anything but Genuine BMW xenon bulbs, as the aftermarket ones can heat up the wirings and stuff. However, I know some people are able to put Morimoto D2S on their E46s without issues.

What shall I look for prior to replacing the xenon bulbs with Morimotos?

Genuine ones are Osram. At least that's what came out of mine and I'm sure they were the factory originals. I replaced with Osram Nightbreakers. Purchased from Powerbulbs in the UK. Never pay full price. It's always possible to get a 20+% off coupon.

Just make sure you get genuine branded ones. Osram or Philips would be my choice. Lots of fakes and crappy versions around.

Remember no such thing as genuine BMW, it's the OEM partner company. I like Osram as well, PowerBulbs yes and RetroFitSource also good vendor.
Interlagos 06 M3, Autologic tune, Agency Power midpipes/exhaust, Fortune Auto coilovers, UUC SSK, Bluebus, Lightwerkz retrofit. MRegistry listing here

+1 for powerbulbs. Way cheaper on there than the USA and they arrived in NY within a week.

they were probably referring to the proliferation of fake brand name bulbs on the market and how easy it is to unknowingly get them.
as long as you get a name brand bulb from a reputable source (amazon doesn't appear to be one of them for HID bulbs) then you should be fine.
