Bilstein strut with stock tophat?

So I picked up a set of billste in sports shocks front and rear from a friend. I'm trying to install the stock top hats but I'm starting to believe that maybe you can't use stock top hats with these struts? With no spring installed and one conical spacer included with the strut and the stock top hat you can see clearly that there are no threads for the nut to thread on to once the top hat is in place with the brass retaining plate.

Am I correct and assuming that you have to use aftermarket top hats or camera plates with this setup?

So it looks like I have none M struts not the M specific struts unfortunately I had no idea they were that different.

AFAIK Bilstein do not market a Sport option for the E 46 M3.
I installed B6 HD struts on mine recently. (staying with factory springs) with no fitment issues.
