What is the significance of the boot loader on an MSS64HP?

Working on a CSL conversion project, so trying to understand the various pieces. On the DME part, I know that I need an MSS54HP with H-Bridge upgrade to be able to operate the flap, plus loading up the CSL software.
In various threads, I also came across the concept of a “CSL boot loader”. What does this mean?

If I start with a regular virgin MSS54HP DME, and flash it with a stock CSL binary, does that mean that the DME now has the “CSL boot loader”?

Do I need to have the “CSL boot loader”?

The bootloader is part of the "OS" in the full binary. This in essence tells it how to boot and interface with the hardware, but as the hardware (MSS54HP) is different than the MSS54HP CSL, the OS needed to be modified, in this case the boot-loader. terra went one step further and fixed the ability to read DTCs (Diagnostic Troubleshooting Codes.

Correct it does not "equal" a CSL DME. Here is more info

I think one can simply bring an MSS54HP CSL bootloader patched DME back to stock by flashing any other MSS54HP (non-CSL) full binary. Someone correct me if I am wrong. This info is something I should update Github / Wiki about.

Interesting … somehow I thought the hardware mods in that post above made it the same as a CSLone. Wonder what differences are left after the hardware mods.

OK makes sense. So, if I am starting with a stock non-CSL M3 that comes with an MSS54 HP, and do the necessary HW changes, and flash the stock CSL binary, I have a "CSL DME". However, better to flash the patched versions so that OBD2 starts working, etc.

Does that sound about right?

Other than the OBD2 item, what are the main differences in the patched software?
