Wow - great diy! I'm working up the courage to do this. Problem is our condo association won't let us work on our cars here but I cringe at the thought of a shop doing it. Thanks again!

You have contributed greatly to the good of the M3 mankind. Seeing this has boosted my confidence greatly. I have done a lot of work on my M3 but VANOS is one of the things I did not dare so far. When I am ready to replace, I will make sure to have a printout of your DIY ready for reference if I get stuck.

      Thanks again.

Very nice detailed write-up. The way I did it a couple years ago was a bit more jank (I didn't have the proper tools or a real proper procedure), so I actually ended up taking the VANOS unit apart in order to remove it from the head, but it all worked out in the end for me. The kinda weird thing (for me at least) is knowing how to properly get the helix bit to disconnect from the cam gears.

Very nice DIY, definitely needs to be added to the sticky. You have outdone yourself.

this also snaps me back to reality and reminds me that i need to soon to pull my vanos again as well as my head to replace a blown gasket.
                Ouch that sucks...

Thanks I have the same problem here in Daytona...I just borrowed a friends garage for a while. I'm thinking of renting a storage unit and doing the work there, you may be able to find one near you.

                    Glad i could help

Engine work is a scary thing...but i believe this to be a good intro to engine work. Its not really too complicated, but it shows you kinda whats involved when taking apart your engine.

I can't stand it and don't feel like paying the shop to do it again...I am planning on replacing it w/ a Dr. Vanos unit, since the BMW-refurb that my shop put in made a mediocor difference...what are you replacing it with?
Interesting. I met this mechanic once that believed that premature failure to vanos's were caused by bad lifters. I have never had the opportunity to try this test myself, but just a thought
