Jeff, did you know there is a version available without the clown nose?
Good writeup regardless! I reconsider this mod once in awhile but I kind of want the E36 version because it's 'proper' (albeit ugly), plus I plan to do an inV1si install which I doubt would be feasible with the autodim coating and homelink guts.
The E36 version (which I had) is horrendously massive. And ugly. Screw proper, this is the mirror we should have had.
And for $150 shipped it was a fine compromise to have the alarm LED. Plus, it acts like a deterrent.
The VIO/WHT wire in the map light harness is the correct wire for switched power. I wired up the autodim to that, so it only functions when the car is on.

Well, the main impetus for me to do it was the following: We have two garage door openers. My dad's car has HomeLink, my mom's car has HomeLink, and one of my sister's cars (which she only got recently) has HomeLink.
My sister's 2nd car and my DD (the Toyota) don't have HomeLink, so we gave one opener to her, and one to my Toyota. That leaves the BMW shortchanged. On top of it, the BMW parks in the garage itself, so it's really sucky. I didn't want to take my opener back from the Toyota (since I drive it much more often) and I didn't want to ask for the opener back from my sister.
On top of it, I have no desire to mod the Toyota for HomeLink, and since I like modding the E36, I figured I'd pick up an autodimming mirror with the HomeLink function, and kill two birds with one stone (a $43,000 BMW in 1999 should have come with an autodimming mirror, c'mon).
I just went outside to test the autodim, and realized that I have made a large mistake. The green wire is for both homelink AND autodimming power. The blue wire is to cancel the autodim for reversing purposes.
You should hook up the green wire to the violet/white switched power, and then homelink will sadly only work with the ignition on.

Switched power is not necessarily a bad thing. If you car ever sits out in front of your garage it would be just like leaving a garage door opener in your driveway. Break in the car, get in the house Fooking crooks.
