Forget Richardsperry, I like buyers like him, I can jack up the price since he doesn't negotiate--there is good advice on this thread.

From alanlil on bimmerforums, giving advice to someone in your shoes---

"150 point "dealer" inspection is worthless. The expensive preventative maintenance that these cars require has little to do with if the car is "safe" or not.

"good for 50k more miles" doesn't sound like the cooling system been overhauled recently.. Is it running on original struts and shocks? Is the dealer putting new rotors on it?

The car needing tie rods, tires and brakes doesn't bode well for the previous owner lavishing it with maintenance. Those are basic items required for it to pass a safety inspection. I'd expect this car to need $2+ in parts.

Typically cars get traded in because they need lots of work and the seller just wants to unload it.

Is this car in the DC area? I'd be happy to take a look at it if it's convenient.

To give you a price point, I paid $13.5 close to a year ago for a very clean 97 manual sedan with 53k miles that had brand new tires, brakes, rotors, RSMs, and belts. Everything else was original. I have caught everything up since, but it took another $2k and a few weekends to overhaul the cooling system, suspension and other various drive line items.

    Edit:

I see it's at Passport and the carfax shows dealer maintenance history. Lots of "checked", but nothing "replaced." This also means that it probably has break in oil in the trans, rear end and PS system. Do yourself a favor and get a good PPI somewhere objective before you pull the trigger.

If it's super clean and it checked out, I'd pay $13 max for it with an expectation of putting a couple grand into it post purchase to overhaul suspension, cooling system and misc. I think between $11 and $12 would be a fair private party price.

I'd also negotiate them taking care of inspection II if it hasn't been done recently. Is the brake fluid clear, has the service light been recently reset?"

Take it for what it's worth. The main thing is to get the history and see what's done or needs to be done. A well maintained car will still need something, just figure out what and how much that will cost you.

That's the correct steering wheel. The "M" emblem is only on the three spoke wheel, 99+

Don't judge before you get there. Some people delete the fogs because they are prone to cracking and they just may be tired of replacing them.

You might even go to the regional forums and see if anyone is willing to go with you to look at the car. A second pair of eyes never hurts, especially if you know what to look for. And someone who knows these cars can tell if it rides correctly.

Good luck! It's a nice looking car.

First, ask the seller if they're willing to take it in for a Pre-Purchase Inspection, what the best time for them would be, and how far they're willing to drive for it.

Then, find a reputable shop (our regional forums, regional BMW CCA, CarTalk, etc) within that radius of the seller, give them a call and see what they charge for Pre-Purchase Inspections, and if it's possible to get the car in during the time frame the seller has given you. Some will let you provide a credit card number over the phone, and then they'll charge you once the inspection is complete.

Thanks to all the great advice and replies. I am definitely going to get a thorough PPI done on the car. The seller also told me that he does not have a recent CARFAX? Should I be worried...he does have all maintenance records though. I am also going tomorrow to test drive it with my moms boy-friend...he knows a lot about cars. Is there anything specifically important I should do tomorrow? Thanks again.

O ya, I am not doing the PPI tomorrow so if there are some things I should check myself, that would be great.

OK, this was a very confusing post since (I'm assuming) you cut and pasted the sellers ad word for word. So I'm reading and thinking -- why is the seller posting?? But I love the green, so I kept reading.

Read it carefully and take notes. Don't be too excited when you check the car out. Make a list of questions. Be smart, be skeptical but don't insult the seller. PPI's can be done by dealers or good indies. Where are you?

Car has the forged LTW rims -- a less common option. That's a plus if they're still in good shape.

Here's a list of common E36 problems. Don't be too bummed, just things to look for:

No, Carfax is nearly worthless. Any information is good information. But Carfax records are often so incomplete as to be completely misleading.

My girlfriend's RSX has been in 2 major collisions, had the engine replaced, is on its 3rd front bumper, and 80% of the car has been resprayed at some point in time. It has a squeaky clean Carfax.

As a for instance. When she hydrolocked the motor, it was at the dealer for over a month while they crated a new one in. Insurance payed the bill. The rotors were completely shot and needed replacement too. Since the car was so new (15K miles), the dealer did it free as an act of good faith. The carfax report says the car was in for a brake job....it doesn't mention a single word about the new motor.

Sorry, but how would a house be any different? Say you own the house next door to the one he's looking at. Are you going to say, Oh hell, he's asking way too much! Offer him $200K less. It's exactly the same thing, just a different scale. Hell no you wouldn't do that. You actually hope some idiot pays that or more, because it keeps the price of your house up... (maybe at least a bit)

The OP is looking to buy a car. Fine. He found one, fine... Supply and demand prove that if he looks, he will see whats out there, and what people are asking and getting. If there is 1 for sale in the last 6 months, and they want $14K for it, well maybe it's worth 14K... cause there aren't any others out there. If that's more than the buyer thinks it's worth, then he doesn't have to buy it.

Exactly how many low mileage M3's do you think are out there for sale? What is the real condition of the car? I don't know, have you haven't looked at it? You don't know.

We shouldn't be here to help a guy get a great deal on buying a car. (and obtw help reduce the value of cars we already own...)

We should be here helping him take care of it, fix it, and enjoy it once he has one... That's all I'm saying...

He is free to offer whatever he wants. Nobody is holding a gun on him.

I actually wasn't saying the price was too high, or it was a bad car, or not worth it, nothing of the sort. I just don't agree with your house analogy, but +1 to everything else you said.

Hey Guys, I just got back from test driving the car...it is in great condition but as always there are a couple things that i need to look at. the windshield had a crack in that was filled recently...the rear tires are in Ok shape but could be better...it has the LTW rims which is a great lightweight option that I liked. I scheduled an appt. for a PPI at the BMW dealership nearby and there going to check the cooling system, thermostat, the suspensions, and a couple things with the electrical system along with doing some pressure tests to check for leaks. It was a great car, loved it, felt amazing, and I was able to drop the price down to $12.5 - what ever needs to be done with tires////inspection II. What is your guys opinion on this and is there anything else i should do?

Sounds like a pretty good deal, hope the PPI checks out. If so, congrats and enjoy!

Sounds like a fair price for a nice example. Keep in mind that ANY car that old you look at will need a few things here and there. If you like it, and there are no major issues, no reason to pass on this.

I had a crack repaired in my windshield. I can't even tell where it was.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Keep us updated!
