Was unaware that vtecs sis that as well. Just noticed someone had mentioned this idea earlier in the thread and offered an example. Would there even be a point to do it on an e36 m3?

GS-R and ITR manifolds are dual runner and the butterfly valves are electronically controlled. They open up at 5800RPM or so, which is audible even in a stock car. Actually, when people say they can "hear VTEC", they're really hearing the butterfly valves open up, not the VTEC lobe on the cams being engaged. You can *not* hear VTEC on a stock B-series motor. Very common misconception. Anyways, other VTEC Hondas do this as well, but those are the ones i'm most familiar with.

Sure, there would be benefit for any car to have dual runners on the IM. Though the car would have to be tuned for it. Even if you could fabricate an IM with dual length runners and figure out the logistics for the butterfly valves to open up, it's no good without the ECU being aware that you're affecting air velocity like that. You've now created a tune that likely wouldn't play nice with any of the common E36 breather mods without recalibration, or more tunes (more cost in R&D and to the end user).

The R&D behind it would be a bit of work, and the cost of such a manifold would be astronomical for our cars. With cheap alternatives like the M50, I doubt any company would be willing to put money into a product like that (look at the Schrick manifold, for instance). Not to mention, the heyday of the E36 aftermarket is dwindling. E46's are coming into their prime now. That's where it's smart to put your R&D into. We'll probably see very little new aftermarket products for E36's from here on in.

Makes sense. I had a friend with a 2000 Civic Si and you could "hear the vtec" on it. I never really looked hard at the engine though.

So is it more of an air velocity effect as opposed to more air flow? I think I'm reading this correctly

        What diff do you have?

That makes a huge difference as well.

        Right - 3.46 LSD

What if someone were to invent/design an intake manifold that had variable diameter intake runners.

Mazda made a variable intake manifold runner length system called VICS in the late 80's/early 90's and put it in several cars. It has a solenoid that opens flaps in the intake manifold around 5000rpm that divert the airflow to the shorter runners.

FSZE 4 cylinder specifically. And I'm sure there are others.

I was thinking the BP but yeah they had a few engines with that setup. You can take the manifold apart and knife edge the runners to make the engagement smoother and pick up like 2whp :rofl3:

Not that I would have done this :shifty:

                Of course not....

I don't have any experience with these. Learned of all this from a friend that insisted on modding a probe:shifty:

I think the early M Coupe and Roadster used the E30 rear suspension, so the diff is a little 168.

no OEM 3.46 for the E36 was ever made that I know (if there was I would of already bought one :shifty

why did the m50 work very well on the s50b30 and of all things the m50 which is 700cc smaller motor and it still ran great. I have driven a 325 and although it didn't feel like the torque of my m3 it felt like it could outrun mine because it wanted to rev freely to the moon. it felt slightly similar to a 2 stroke dirt bike not the on off switch but like hitting a slight powerband. of anything you would think the large intake would work best on our motors, because of their size and their ability to physically need more air. wouldn't an s52 with m50 still outrun the s50? just my thoughts.

s50b30 is the Euro motor, not sure which motor you are refering too :clueless:

but yes, a US S52 with M50 manifold SHOULD beat a US S50
