Was unaware that vtecs sis that as well. Just noticed someone had mentioned this idea earlier in the thread and offered an example. Would there even be a point to do it on an e36 m3?
GS-R and ITR manifolds are dual runner and the butterfly valves are electronically controlled. They open up at 5800RPM or so, which is audible even in a stock car. Actually, when people say they can "hear VTEC", they're really hearing the butterfly valves open up, not the VTEC lobe on the cams being engaged. You can *not* hear VTEC on a stock B-series motor. Very common misconception. Anyways, other VTEC Hondas do this as well, but those are the ones i'm most familiar with.
Sure, there would be benefit for any car to have dual runners on the IM. Though the car would have to be tuned for it. Even if you could fabricate an IM with dual length runners and figure out the logistics for the butterfly valves to open up, it's no good without the ECU being aware that you're affecting air velocity like that. You've now created a tune that likely wouldn't play nice with any of the common E36 breather mods without recalibration, or more tunes (more cost in R&D and to the end user).
The R&D behind it would be a bit of work, and the cost of such a manifold would be astronomical for our cars. With cheap alternatives like the M50, I doubt any company would be willing to put money into a product like that (look at the Schrick manifold, for instance). Not to mention, the heyday of the E36 aftermarket is dwindling. E46's are coming into their prime now. That's where it's smart to put your R&D into. We'll probably see very little new aftermarket products for E36's from here on in.
