Check for tuning / CVN checksum

Hi - I've acquired a M3 and I want to check if it's got a tune installed or not, what is the easiest way? I have access to INPA, Protool, Tool32 and a K+CAN cable available. Ideally I'd like to (from google searching) run a Mode $09 check which should return a CVN value right? What would indicate it's a tune and what should that value be?

It's an 08 M3 so MSS60. Cheers

left scroll down to STATUS_CHECKSUMMEN_INJ and press F5
in the right window you will see the result

On the MSS60, I wouldn’t rely on a generic Mode $09 CVN check alone. Mode $09 can return CAL ID/CVN where supported, but the important part is comparing what the DME reports against the correct factory software/calibration for that exact car. (Car Diagnostics Platform⁠)

Since you already have Tool32 and ProTool, I’d first pull the MSS60 identification/software numbers and compare the installed software against the BMW factory ZUSB/software version. A CVN mismatch can indicate modified calibration, but a matching CVN by itself isn’t absolute proof that the ECU is untouched.

If you want to go further, make a full read of the MSS60 and compare the binary against the appropriate stock file. The MSS6x Flasher tools specifically support MSS60 identification and full reads, so that gives you a much more definitive answer than guessing from the CVN alone. (github.com⁠)

If you post the MSS60 identification/software numbers you get from Tool32, someone should be able to tell you what factory software version you’re on and whether it looks stock.
