    6-speed detent pins repair

    Hello,

Does anyone have any information on how to replace the detent pins in the side of the gear box? I see a few pin repair kits on FCPeuro and other sites, but cannot seem to find any diys on how to do this. I find lots of info for the 5spd and 6spd Non-M transmissions, but none for the 420G.

i have done this repair on 5 speed getrag, but would like to have more information on it before I decide to dive into it blindfolded. Thanks in advance

remove the bolts and the cover, under it are 5 holes with pins inside, but the gears detents are the odd numbers and don't touch the even numbers pin as they are for interlock pins to prevent multiple gears engaged at same time. Original detent are balls and the updated parts should be sleeves to prevent cocking and jammed.

That’s the pin that goes into the selector rod joint?

What about the 2 plastic caps with the lock rings? The ones that are on the left side of the transmission, similar to the 5speed 5th gear/reverse pins?

uhhh I think we may be thinking of different things. I know theres a plastic cap on the top of the transmission, sorta near the rod selector joint, but not the pin that goes into the gear selector joint

They are for the 4 gates (rotational detents) -- R; 1st/2nd;3rd/4th;5th/6th and not for the gears and neutral (linear motion detents).

He was asking about the gear detents.

Do you have any references or experience on how replace the components in each of those locations? I’m in the middle of an engine rebuild and I just wanna do everything I can to make the car better while it’s convenient.
                thanks!

Fcp Euro produced a YT video about replacing detents on ZF-5 tranny. Might be helpful to you.

So after watching the video that akamin68 posted(thank you by way) I began to start searching more in detail the kits to replace these and I’m running into some issues.

Starting with the two detents on the side of the transmission, referring to real oem, I’m able to source all the part numbers individually, however the kits that have everything together, have mix matching part numbers according to realoem. Particularly the springs have different part mumbers in the kit, than what realoem says they should be.

my other issue is with the 3 pins that go in the top, i see a kit with the same part number as realoem, seems legit. However according to that video with the ZF transmission, bmw updated the design and incorporated a sleeve to be used with a skinnier pin, this is also noted for sale individually. The first kit with the matching part number as realoem does not incorporate the sleeves.

so my question is, does anyone know if there was a part number update for either/both of these different pin sets? The repair seems pretty straightforward, but I’m a stumped on the part number issues. I can clearly see all the correct part numbers according to realoem for sale, but with some of the extras, I just want to make sure I’m not missing out on potentially installing a better designed part.

For the two detent pins/springs for the shifting gates, read the SMG to 6mt conversion thread which lists the part number.
For the upper right gear detents, all suppliers should only have the updated sleeves instead of balls by now.

Arent the metal balls in different part of the transmission? Neither of the options shown in the photo I attached have balls. On real oem it shows the ball in a different area.

The detents for the engaged gear/neutral were updated to sleeves and no balls.
There are balls in other parts such as the interlock to prevent multiple engaged gears at once.

Ok, thats what I thought. I pulled out my old pins, and I see no visible sleeve or balls. I’ll be ordering most of the parts individually since it seems like the kits from BMW have mismatched part numbers. Thanks!

No balls or sleeves for all 3 detents? How did it keep the engaged gears (R; 1/2; 3/4) from popping out if no detents?
