Long story short I have a basically new dual mass flywheel, clutch and pressure plate that have maybe 5 miles on them before they were removed off a different M3. I bought them all new so I know they were all used together since new. Is it necessary to reset the pressure plate before installing again?

Yes, FCP sells the OE self-adjusting clutch reset tool. Also doable with just some flathead screwdrivers.2003.5 E46 M3 Silver Grey/Cinnamon

Need to depress the fingers in the middle so you can reset the SAC.
I cut a clutch disc centering tool down. I fit the pressure plate onto the flywheel. Install the cut down centering tool and then fit some sort of mandrel on the end of the 3 jaw puller so you can depress the fingers on the PP so you can rotate the SAC mechanism. Rotate the SAC mechanism and hold it in place, tighten the pressure plate into the flywheel. The SAC mechanism should not rotate back.
