    Squeaky Throttle Bodies

My car's throttle bodies have been squeaking ever since I bought it three years ago (probably longer actually).

I've never done anything about it because I can't hear them with the engine on and I didn't want to grease them so as to not attract dirt.

However, I was just recently in there and I could tell that actuating them the first 10-15% required more force than actuating them through the rest of the travel.

So, now I'm rethinking whether I should do something about the squeak. I was pushing down on the top connection of the throttle linkage, so it could be that I perceived the first part of the travel as harder just because of the geometry of the arm. But, I'd appreciate hearing some opinions on this.

Do other people's throttle bodies squeak too? Anybody tried lubricating them?

If you do lube, use something like this.

I used bicycle chain oil, something paraffin based. I know someone told me to…I forget why.

There are a couple of needle bearings on the rail and the actuator for the throttle butterflies that are the moving parts. The part that the butterflies slide into and are screwed to. Then lubricate the springs.

      WD40 won’t last long.

I use a dry spray lube.
I wanted to avoid the gummy build up of dirt/dust when a wet lube is applied.
I found some wurth dry PTFE spray during my hunt for graphite, and used that.
I have since found some graphite for the next time.
The wurth did stop the squeaks.

I was going to suggest some graphite but anything wurth is legit.

              Hi Heinzboehmer,

Its typical for the S54 to squeak. In most cases
the squeak comes from the none adjustable plastic
linkages. But they are very hard to lube unless the
              intake is out.

One should use Silicone base grease so it stays in.

Never Petroleum based because the none adjustable
linkages are made from plastic and the Petroleum based
lubricant will tend to soften/eat the plastic slowly.

The proper way is to remove the linkage and fill them with
grease and then pop them back in this way the grease
stays inside behind the linkage ball. Be careful when you
pop them because they are old and tend micro crack at the
eye ball. While there might as well put new ones anyway
in the S54 linkage system there should be zero play other
wise it will mess with the fly by wire a bit.

              Hope this helps a bit

              Regards,
              Anri

Thanks for the help guys. I like the graphite idea because it's dry (and I have some on hand). I'll give it a try soon to see if anything changes.
