Sorry to hear dude. Get a breakdown on all parts and labor. Like others, first thing I was thinking is “wow $3k is steep.” But now that you dropped this bomb on us I am ultra shocked.

Get the breakdown on parts and labor and share it here. Also find it odd he quoted you parts only… something is fishy here

For $5600 you can get subframe, rod bearings, and vanos taken care of with $$$$ to spare no problem.

The worst thing you could ever do when taking your car to a shop is making a laundry list of stuff. It's very easy for them to pad costs on each task individually so that the aggregate is actually more than the sum.

Always get one or two things done at a time and ask for an explicit breakdown for each, otherwise the shop (or anyone for that matter) will take advantage of this, much like it does in this very situation.

Car is in Ohio and I'm in Wyoming, I'd have had to have shipped it to you.

I told him to inspect the car and do what was needed to make it safe to drive back to Wyoming.

So, yeah. I'm hoping he'll let me pay him about $500/mo until I've paid everything off. I'll have paid him more than what he has in parts by the time I get there.

He does have an itemized invoice, so I'll post that up once I get it.

Edit: Forgot, needed a new caliper and also resurfaced the discs too. And a brand new battery. Hopefully the new cable will help with the drain issues. Also had to send off a tire or two to get a patch for a small hole.

No, SE Ohio near Marietta. The detail place is in Belpre.

            Precision Automotive in Waterford.

EDIT: With the added cost to get the car fixed, the detail is out of the question now.

So, thinking of VANOS work and rod bearings in the future...

Know of anywhere near Ft Collins/Denver that'll do that work?

These guys are in Denver, I believe they have a shop, they are well regarded for their Vanos rebuilds they ship out.

I recently had some work done on my other car. The rates have definitely gone up. Whatever you think it used to cost back in 2019, it’s now 1.5 times more expensive. Good luck dude. I hope you get it going again.
                    Just some old shitty cars.

It's not that it wasn't running, there was just a lot of things that needed done to get it in GOOD running condition. I drove it the day before I left for Wyoming.

                      Bit thank you.

From the looks of it, that seems more like a standard body shop than an independent Euro/BMW shop. If they don't work on these cars day in and day out, it will take them longer to do fairly moderate work like a valve adjustment. A specialty shop rate is probably more, but the time to complete is less.

Oh, it's 100% just a standard shop. He's not a specialized BMW indy.

He's also down to just himself as the last guy started his own shop out of his garage because he lived about an hour away and the others just... left.

Main reason I used him is because he's about 10min from my folks place and he's familiar with 2000s BMWs as his wife had a couple.

Maybe someone can comment if yaw? Sensor needs to be coded to the car or something. But if it were me I’d go to the nearest junkyard and steal one off any old e46 (assuming part # is the same). No way I’d pay $1300. Or find a junk m3 that someone’s parting out and tell him $20 he will probably take it.
