Using parts from another vanos

Anyone know if an exhaust piston from another vanos can be used to replace a damaged one (accident with pick) in a different vanos, or are they bed in/unique to the vanos?

I think the piston has fair amount of clearance -- they need seals to seal -- so they should be interchangeable. The same cannot be said on the pump disk tight clearance.

When you say the same can't be said for the pump disc, do you mean the disc itself or the surrounding spring, caps and ring?

why would the disc not be interchangeable considering the springs and caps push against the outer ring and so have some ability to compress or withdraw further?

I chipped a piston on my Vanos when i was working on it, ended up swapping in another piston and it’s been fine. This was about 5 years ago.

This is a low volume displacement pump, so the disk and 4 pistons should be matched from the same vanos module. The disk center hole also has tight clearance with the vanos center shaft, so at least the disk to shaft clearance should be checked. The disk outer ring (and roller bearing) can be interchanged.
