Removing HK sub and CD changer

I would like to start removing things for weight savings and these seem like easy ones to get rid of since I rarely if ever listen the the radio.

Would removing these two items cause any issues with using the radio?

If you have the business cd radio, the only thing you need in the trunk is the amp. You can get a bracket that just holds the amp and uses a lot less metal. You can also fit different trunk side carpet that gives you a bit more storage space. The bracket is 65128370926.

I guess I should've mentioned I have Nav, what a pia it is.Im thinking single din stereo and two speakers would be good enough.

I think I can still use the bracket you referenced though. So thank you

Getting rid of nav is pretty involved, but it’s doable. You need either a non-nav harness or you have to run wires from where the BM54 plugs in in the trunk to a CD53 in the dash.

When I replaced by HK Nav unit with an Avin unit + BavSound speakers I too removed the CD changer, and radio unit in the trunk. As DoubleSidedTape mentioned, you'll need a new harness from the trunk to the dash. If you are doing this purely for weight savings, then I personally wouldn't bother. The components in the trunk weigh next to nothing.

This is the cable I used, I don't believe the ends at the dash are specific to the Avin units so you should be able to use a business radio harness adapter Quadlock 6 Meter Navigation Extension Cable (avinusa.com)

I used that same cable, I ended up cutting the four connectors off at the dash end splicing in the connector for a business cd radio.

I haven’t weighed all this stuff, but I know it is a lot more than the business cd I put in, and eventually I’ll replace the harness with one from a non-nav car which will save a bit more since I have a lot of redundant wiring at the moment.

Yeah - the sub is a real boat anchor. I was amazed how much it weighed when I pulled it from my track car. Weight up high too.

when i did my nav delete just the trunk components and speakers added up to about 26 pounds, so a decent amount of weight savings to be had

That's kind of what I did-- I pulled out every stock stereo component and the stock wiring harness, swapped the OE Nav head unit for an Avin, and plugged my 4 speakers (which I selected by their weight) directly into the Avin, using its' internal amplifier. The modules/wiring/brackets totaled almost 50 lbs, and I gained a bunch of functionality (critically, wireless carplay, but also including track functionality-- I can monitor tire temps/pressures, or add extra gauges, or pull codes, etc, using the Avin).

All I've really lost is bass-- the mids/highs sound dramatically better than they ever did with the stock stereo. I have a stealthbox and tiny (2 lb) amp I could install, if I wanted the bass, also, but care about the weight savings more than the bass (especially since what I listen to is podcasts, 99% of the time).

Obioban that sounds like the perfect solution.

I must be mis-remembering then... That was a long time ago . I recall the HK sub/amp being the main contributor.

The stock stereo harness is pretty beefy— prewired for every possible option the car could have had. Removing that is pretty significant savings.

its been a while since i did my audio project too, luckily i documented the component weights of what was removed because i'm always surprised by the numbers when i look them up again

i'll start another thread for reference sake

Than get a Bluetooth speaker that you leave on passanger seat when you drive the car on the street and to/from track. You will save way more weight and probably get better sound quality than half a HK oem system!
Im not sure where I am heading yet with this car. Im kinda torn between keeping it almost factory and ripping everything out. I am going to take it slow and enjoy the process either way.

There is a middle ground. The middle ground is the happy place.
