    HK audio component weights

for anyone curious or interested in slimming down their audio system, documented weights of the HK nav system components are listed below

Nav head unit - 6.2 lbs
    2x front tweeter mid + 2x front woofer - 3 lbs
    2x rear side speaker + 2x rear deck speaker - 3 lbs
rear subwoofer assembly - 7.5 lbs
    BM53/IBUS/GPSDVD/HKamp/mountingbracket - 15.5 lbs
complete audio wiring harness - 11 lbs

so all in all about 40ish pounds of weight savings to be had if you're doing a full delete. of course that number goes down when you start adding components back if you still want an audio system

    edit:

weights of a couple of popular aftermarket head units below

    Avin Avant 3 - 2.6 lbs
    Avin Avant 4 - 3.1 lbs

Thanks for documenting! Wonder how much a regular business CD system weighs in total. I’m planning to swap my nav for that, including the harness. The CD unit itself is much lighter than the nav, and the harness is 9lbs vs 11 (according to the shipping label of the used one I have next to me). Additionally, I don’t think it needs a separate BM53 or DVD unit, and can use a smaller bracket in the trunk (??) . Seems like maybe 10-15 pounds less.

Not that significant for the effort involved but I mostly just think it looks and aged better.

As I mentioned in the other thread, if you just want to mount the amp in the trunk, you can get part 65128370926. Ignore the mess of wires. It’s been difficult to locate a coupe HK non-nav harness.

Wouldn't it be better to just get rid of the amp completely. Or maybe add a small amp under a front seat.

I’m not looking for max weight savings. My (eventual) plan is business cd head unit, bluebus, bavsound/Rockford fosgate speakers, and HK amp.

Where did you pull those numbers from?

By memory, that mounting bracket number feels to high and that wiring harness number looks low.

... but I didn't weight things individually, just stuck them all in a box and weighted them all at the same time.

                True… but they’re often wrong.

those are weighings i did myself as i pulled components out of the vehicle

the mounting bracket itself is most likely pretty light, but my weight listed for it is combined with the other components mentioned

wiring harness is for the whole thing minus a 2 foot section that crosses from the driver side to passenger transmission tunnel. i recall you cut this off too rather than remove your front carpet to unbolt it from the vehicle

im glad i did document these weights (almost everything removed was given/thrown away) because i occasionally come back to my spreadsheet and am surprised at how often i misremember specific numbers

those weights are pretty unreliable in my experience

I finally got an Avant 4 for my E39 M5. Same unit as the E46 essentially. It's coming next week so I'll weigh it and post back.

the Avin3 is a pretty flimsy 2.6 pounds lol

any of the newer gens will definitely be heavier since it appears they added some extra hardware on the back. i doubt they're heavier than the factory unit though

I weighed my wiring from a 02 M3 and businesss CD. The wiring weighed in at 10 lbs. OPs weight look about right especially for a navi car.

My guess the Pre-LCI cars audio wiring may me slightly lighter. We didn't get any bluetooth options.
