I can relate... I mean... we're all here because we love naturally aspirated sports cars, and some of us love naturally aspirated sports wagons... I'm still rolling an Allroad 4.2 because of this but it's definitely not produced today... I bought my son one as well last year (cream puff that jumped timing -- $500).Originally posted by oceansize View PostName a better wagon for $42k in production today 🤣 ... So if you want a naturally aspirated sport wagon, this looked like a really good one.

I didn't find it boring. I understand what you're saying, as it wasn't necessarily a torque-y motor like the M54, but it doesn't have as much top end excitement as the S54 either. I thought of my e90 330 as a modern version of the e36m3/4/5, so maybe more similar to the S52 than anything else? It's obviously not as fast as my F30 340, but it was more fun to drive.

As good as the n52 is, it's boring. Almost too good and linear. I remember the m50 and m54 with more fondness. N53 just sounded like trouble, but I have no experience.

I'm not an expert but that was one thing I liked about the wagon just above, the N52. My limited research on N53's doesn't paint a good picture, but I don't have actual ownership experience.Originally posted by Nate047 View PostSpeaking of non M e9x cars, how do we feel about N53 powered cars?

I recently sold my 6-speed RWD E91 and don't really want another one at the moment (even though they're amazing cars) but I was still tempted by that one.Originally posted by oceansize View Post
I watched that one, the desire was strong.
BMW doesn't make anything new that's comparable to that E91. The spec is doing most of the heavy lifting there though. Manual and RWD is uncommon. Throw in M Sport and a desirable color combo and it's a low-mileage example? You won't find another.Originally posted by tnord View PostA $42k 3 series might be crazier than the 125k mile M3 for $49k.

I bought a 2022 Subaru Outback brand new for my wife cause that's what she wanted. Right in that same ballpark money wise (little less). The worst car I've ever owned. That head unit is unbelievably bad and the CVT, good god. Dumped that thing for a new VW Tiguan R Line Black. At least that thing shifts properly and doesn't ride like a meandering elephant.
Honestly, part of me wishes I had bought this.Last edited by oceansize; 03-27-2026, 04:41 AM.
