Make sure to refresh the head gasket too while you're in there. S54 head gaskets inevitably go out.

Members of this board will have you rebuilding the engine, transmission, and diff if you follow their advice. Replace the worn parts with good used stuff and move on.

Warranty book time to replace the rocker arms is 17hrs, most shops will use a 1.5-2x multiplier of that number. BMW also calls for pulling the head to do that job, but it can be done in the car IIRC.

Agreed. It sort of depends which follower has gone bad, I think? If it’s at the back of the motor that’s a pretty ‘easy’ replacement as those are the ones that come out first when you pull the follower rod. But if it’a one of the front ones that’s gone bad… you might have to remove the front clip if the rod fouls against the radiator support.
