Whatever you do, don't ask Casa de Mesa for his opinion on this matter...as he rolls around in a sick, freshly painted Shark Blue car. Unless you are prepared to share his level of commitment in time/energy and funds I'd walk away from the thought of a respray to a different color.

Casa de Mesa killed it. Right way, right approach, right outcome. There is a couple of other dudes on here who went that nardo grey color (or close enough) who also killed it. Also the one in estoril but if I remember correctly he went that way due to an accident which is a good time to go that route.3.91 | CMP Subframe & RTAB Bushings | SMG (Relocated & Rebuilt) | ESS Gen 3 Supercharger | Redish | Beisan | GC Coilovers & ARCAs | Imola Interior | RE Rasp | RE Diablo | Storm Motorwerks Paddles | Will ZCPM3 Shift Knob | Apex ARC-8 19x9, 19x9.5 | Sony XAV-AX5000 | BAVSOUND | CSL & 255 SMG Upgrades | Tiag | Vert w/Hardtop

Honestly it depends on your level of attachment to the car.
If you're keeping the car for a long long time, it's best to leave it alone for now and figure it out later.
If you plan on flipping the car some time in the near future, I'd fix as much as I could without doing a full respray.
If you're gonna spend on a full respray, CB should not be an option unless it's a damn deal. I'm talking like sub 5k homie hookup good materials and prep work with at least all the rubber removed etc.2004 BMW ///M3 Carbon Black/Cinnamon 6MT

Thank you Mayan-Viking and oceansize for the props.
A full respray done right will have an immense impact on the car. So will paint correction. For a full respray to a very high level, expect to pay through the nose (more than what's quoted above), regardless if you do the R&R or leave that to the shop. You can certainly offset the cost by DIYing as much as you can, but it is an arduous process. I underestimated the work if I'm being honest...
If you're going to do the respray, check out some of the build threads in the forum to get an idea on effort. Also I'd highly recommend considering a color change, unless you're hell bent on CB. You could find a color close to CB so you don't have to pull the drivetrain and motor as Gt4 said. That would save a ton of labor and time.
Wrapping the car I feel like is temporary and just pissin money away if it's a street car. Correct the paint work, spot respray or fully send that bitch! For me the effort, time and Benjamins were worth the result.
Can't wait to hear what you decide. Let me know if I can help in the decision making process.Build thread: Topaz Blue to Shark Blue

My car was repainted as part of two insurance claims, both were being repaired at the same time so insurance covered about 80% of the costs. It came out "okay" and the total cost (not my out of pocket portion, grand total) was around $10k. Knowing what I know now about that whole process, I would be wary of repainting another car. It will end up costing you a lot of money to get a truly good paint job. Sure, some of this depends on the shop you use, maybe you'll get really lucky and find an amazing paint guy who is somehow not expensive. But more than likely, you'll end up with a poor quality job if you in any way try to get things done cheaply, or on a hook up, or anything like that. Expect to pay $15k and be happy if you come out under that.

So I'm in the same boat with my CB M3. I had the front end resprayed a few years back but the California sun and father time have taken their toll on the rest of the car, to put it lightly. Pushing 200k miles, having accidents on record, and with no plans to sell the car ever, resale value isn't part of the equation for me. Pure personal satisfaction and enjoyment.
As mentioned, if money is no object, full respray all day (and thats the route i'll probably be going). The main thing is finding the right shop with the right talent and thoroughly establishing expectations beforehand, as you can have completelyyy different quality of work/end results from one shop to another. I'd find the best 5-7 shops on the east coast and basically vet all of them to pick the right one. I can find someone to do the job for 3-5k, but reached out to a higher end shop and was quoted at 7500+ exterior to start and 10k+ if doing the entire chassis. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? For me, also yes. Maybe find/reach out to people with resto cars and see who they refer you to. I've seen some gnarly work at my local Cars & Coffees. Probably need to start asking around myself.
I have considered a different color because I'll probably have the drivetrain out of the car sometime next year, but with the LSBs and PHYs (my personal fav, which I know some people hate) and IMRs comes more unwanted attention. I love the subtle look and blurple hues of CB; has grown on me immensely over my near decade of ownership so I have a difficult time convincing myself to change it up. There are some non-bmw colors out there that I love (like Nardo gray) but I find that kind of transition overwhelming. But at $10k, makes you think..Last edited by Boost; 12-08-2022, 12:15 AM.

I am in the same situation now, maybe even worse paint than yours 6-7/10, I may be like 5-6/10.I have one rust spot on A pillar, another rear quarter panel and Previous owner flew out to the rocks on track, so both sides and wheel arches are rock blasted a bit. I bought the car cheap but still, all original paint, no accident car. Now kind of torn what to do with that. I am not sure if it can be corrected. But here in Slovakia quality full respray costs like 3k, not that bad like your quotes

I would suggest meeting with Larry from AMMO (https://ammonyc.com/pages/contact-us) who is a well known detailer located in the NYC area and talk with him about your expectations. He may be able to correct your paint to a level that meets your desire while saving you thousands from a respray. I use his products and have watched countless videos he's made. His products are outstanding and his ATA (i.e. AMMO Training Academy) educational videos with Kevin Brown will blow your mind.

interesting and pertinent topic.
I have a jet black car with 100k+ and it needs to have a few dings/creases pulled out. If I was going to get a CSL trunk that needs painting, and a new front bumper that needs painting, I feel like just painting the whole thing and doing all the bodywork is the way to go? Fully expecting $8-$10k.
