turning crankshaft on SMG engine (valve cover opened)

    turning crankshaft on SMG engine (valve cover opened)

    I'm in the process of putting vanos back on and it seems like my crank isn't turning easily after a couple of ratchet turns against the crank bolt. Is it because the car remains in gear? if so, Should I try turning the key to accessory and shifting to neutral?

        i didnt want to turn on accessory in case it does something to offset vanos timing

          I wonder if there's a way to get into neutral mechanically like you can with the DCT.

            Before working on the VANOS or adjust valve clearance, or anything that requires turning the crank, tranny should be in neutral to make life eaier.

              It won鈥檛. You set all the timing with alignment pins manually.

                Disconnect the electrical connector to VANOS and put it in neutral.

                Unnecessary though because the VANOS only works when there is oil pressure.
